Momus wrote interestingly a few months ago about alcohol-oriented districts in cities.  Things I read about England make me think all of that country qualifies as one.

"London revelers mark drink ban with subway chaos"

So let me get this straight: London bans beer on the subway for safety reasons. A bunch of dudes show up to protest, get drunk, and turn into violent, aggressive assholes.

The definition of "backfire" should reference this news article.

the protest/celebration was on the last night before the ban kicked in. and i'm pretty sure there wasn't any violence as a result.

Samir, I'm no fan of Boris Johnson, but how can he credibly be blamed for the nasty displays of alcoholism during the protest party?

Also: isn't a ban on the consumption of alcohol on public transport reasonable? Especially in a country that has a BIG problem with alcohol? I've taken those late night tube journeys in London - people don't need to be getting any drunker on the way home.

"Then a fight broke out between about five people, but because we were so tightly packed in it soon spread throughout the carriage and I had to struggle to escape to the next one," he told PA.

"The atmosphere had really changed by this point. People were ripping off adverts and maps and being sick all over the place.

"When it pulled in to Embankment people fell out and carried on fighting on the platform. Thankfully police were there, and they handled it very well."

Puking is not violence. Ripping up adverts is what people should do sober. As for maps, well, maps are for tourists, and, according to Werner Herzog, tourism destroys cultures.

So, I have to say, well done, drunken revelers.

Your activities were creepy.

That phrase should never be used to frame an argument.
