What music have you had the longest without listening to?
« on: June 09, 2008, 08:01:35 PM »
I just saw that I have music in my iTunes library that I have never played that was first added in 2003.  A compilation of electronic music from Asphodel records.

Also, I bought a book 2 years ago called "The Now Habit" that is about procrastination that I haven't read yet, though I'd bet I have been carting some some books around for 12 years or more without reading them.

Probably that vinyl copy of "Youthquake" that hasn't seen a needle since 1985.

Massive Attack, 100th Window
Polyphonic Spree, The Fragile Army
Portastatic, Be Still Please

Checked out a couple or three tracks on each CD and didn't really care for them. I feel somehow guilty that I should have been into this music, but just couldn't get into it.

Oh irony of ironies!

I have CDs that I've bought and never put in the player. The only example I can think of right now would be Finishing School's Destination Girl, but there are many others.

A kinda similar phenomenon - what artists do you not listen to that much, but you still feel obligated to buy every new album they come out with? For example, I have a lot of Will Oldham records. (Here, I feel obligated to say "Don't Judge.") I have never listened to any of them for a significant amount of time; I've never even listened to any of them enough to form an opinion about them. Yet I bought that Ask Forgiveness thing that came out recently, and I didn't even know why I was buying it. I haven't gotten around to getting his new one yet. Hopefully I was able to break the cycle.
It ain't ego, it's my love for you.

I definitely felt obligated to at least try Portastatic and Polyphonic Spree, and I can't explain why.

It's a great question, Matt --- the only bands about which I feel a compulsion to buy every release are probably Radiohead and Sonic Youth. I used to feel that way about the Replacements back in the day (another overused cliche). I can't say I've been disappointed, and I know exactly why I am compelled to buy all of them, but I don't think I need to feel this way. I'd get through my life just fine even if I didn't make those purchases.

I have almost 400 CDs that I have bought and never played; the oldest ones in that group are probably Blood Brothers and Soundtrack of our Lives. And it's not like I can afford to buy CDs that I don't listen to, but I throw my pocket change into a little vase in the bedroom, and every time it gets full, I go buy 40-50 bucks worth of CDs with it.

But I am sure there is vinyl upstairs that I haven't touched in 25 years. Atomic Rooster, for example. Steve Martin. Queen post-Jazz. It's a whole hall of embarrassments up there.

I used to be pretty draconian about selling CDs I wasn't into.  Partly because I was poor and it was a good way to get new CDs.

But with all of these .coms and M3Ps I hardly know what's what anymore.  I just have this accumulation of shit music.

I've thought of dumping half my mp3 collection hundreds of times and then I pull back and don't delete any of it. I know I'll never listen to it but I can't bring myself to do it. I don't even consider it a collection, it's on a hard drive that I never look at and nobody else can see and it has no monetary value. It's worthless. Maybe I'll go home and not be able to weed it out tonight. I mean, you might as well keep it, it's not harming anything but why?

I really love 'Dig Your Own Hole' - a pivotal album in my musical development.

Exit Planet Dust and Dig Your Own Hole are decent in the car--rapid pace, driving beats and all.  However, I suspect that listening to either album at home would lead to a headache.

Soundtrack of Our Lives are great. You should play that one.
I'll probably go into the wee hours.

It was actually only recently that I gave the Chemical Brothers a fair shot; they're not bad.  The video for Star Guitar turned me.
