Weezy is the GBV of rap: relentlessly prolific, endearingly eccentric, and kind of shitty whenever he makes a shameless crossover attempt. He is horribly overrated, but only because he's been every P-Fork nerd's token rapper for so long. (They're required to like one rap record per year each, and it can't always be Fishscale.)

do you even read Pitchfork

I didn't admit anything but my confusion when it comes to you, Eagle.

Basically, at this point, I think you're Wurster.

It's not "horseshit" so much as it's good-time party music. Which would still be tolerated in rock, if anyone still released it.

All I could think of was The Hold Steady. Maybe not good time party music, but fun as hell.

He should change his name to Myclef Meyers.

I laughed heartily at this.  Well done, JJ!

I don't think Lil' Wayne is too much of a pop crossover rapper and most people would agree that his pop style stuff (like Lollipop) blows.

And when it comes down to this recording
I must be Lebron James if he's Jordan
No, I want rings for my performance
I'm more Kobe Bryant of an artist
Same coach, same game, been starting
...Same triangle offense
I come through the lane like dargent
Refree niggas is lame they call charging
I have no brain I'm retarded
We are not the same I'm a Martian
You can be my Jane I'm your Tarzan
I'm from the jungle where the snakes is all poison
I am magnificent like Marcus
You might wanna fall back like August
Or late September whatever you call it
I hit niggas in the head like Vonage
I am talking to no particular audience
But understand I'm the guardian
And understand there won't be no guarding him
You will just get played like an accordion
I don't give a damn if she's bossy
I keep pussy running like a faucet
She better catch like she Steve Largent
Because I'm "What's up" like "Martin"

There's a verse from "Dough is What I Got" on one of Da Drought mixtapes. I think at times, he has some very funny and witty rhymes but I'd prefer quality over quantity. He may put out 200 verses a year but he still doesn't know how to make really memorable songs.

To the GBV reference, I think Wayne is losing his indie cred now that he seems to be leaving mixtapes behind and sold a million albums in a week. I'd almost liken his exhaustive catalog to somebody like Ryan Adams but nobody seems to like Adams anymore.

That's probably because he sucks.

If ur impressed by that witticism I encourage you to look up a now passed rapper Big L
or even a guy name Akinyele if you think sports metaphors are clever boy will you like him.

That GBV comparison is so wrong and nutty I'm convinced now you guys don't anything about rap. Wayne has never been an independent artist he's always been on one major labels rap imprint or another. Those mixtapes have just been promotional devices to help sell the label albums. Equating that to indie rock outings is....such a bizarre take on the whole thing its rather shocking.

There actually is a real independent and small label hiphop scene

Yes, that too. I was never a fan but he did have some mild popularity back in 2001 or so.

The Pitchfork indier-than-thou attitude is a strange pivot from Wyclef Jean superfan.

I know Wayne has never been an indie act but he has been admired by indie blogs and such for a few years now because of the mixtapes.

You don't need to be condescending about it. I'm not even a Wayne fan (and nobody who has posted yet seems to be defending him either). He's popular for some reason and that's that.

I'm no Wyclef superfan, I've said that several times now
hes a decent musician and rapper something I can easily contrast with Wayne since they did a song together
a song I wouldn't have known about but for looking on youtube trying to see why this dude is so popular.
