Because I'm cultured. "When the spirit hits you we want you to blow your whistle instead of blow your brains out."
Rahsaan Roland Kirk / Here Comes The Whistleman
Here's some jazz that even us stupid people can appreciate!

Rahsaan was a genius. Very unique. My favorite work of his is a live album from '74 called "Bright Moments."

"Volunteered Slavery" is a another great one.

Did a fair bit of freelance work in March; the checks finally came through. Used most of the money to cover a trifle our enormous pile of debt; kept a little bit out for myself. Holed up in my office grading written projects and writing finals today; stopped by my favorite record store on the way. Hunkered down with the CDs I picked up on random play. They are

Nick Cave - The Boatman's Call
The Grateful Dead - Workingman's Dead
Neil Young - Ragged Glory
Suede (1st record)
The Replacements - Tim
Screamadelica - XTRMNTR
The Fall - This Nation's Saving Grace
Dire Straits (1st record)

51 bucks!!! Now back to work.

Good luck with the marking, Dave. I'm on my teaching practicum right now, and my head cold and I will be spending most of my weekend marking maps of former French colonial territories and persuasive paragraphs.

On a happier note, the recent Best Show talk of F'ed Up and related side projects reminded me to pull out my favorite single of last year:

marvdartargets

Seriously, Teenage Targets is a perfect power pop song (and I'm using the term power pop in the Westerberg/Case sense of the word). Also reminds me alot of the first Tsar album; not as polished, but just as soaring. Grab this if you see it.

Speaking of F'd Up, for those who haven't heard, Matador is doing a Buy Early, Get Now for David Comes to Life. For $30 CD/$35 vinyl, you get the album on the release date, a digital download of 5 non-LP tracks, an early digital download of the album (released in 4 parts, 1 part per day on May 10 - 13), a digital download of David's Town, and 4 exclusive 7"s of non-LP tracks.

Sorry if this sounds like an ad for the album, but it's a pretty good deal and also exciting for a record nerd like me.
I'll probably go into the wee hours.

I don't love the whole thing, but the first 2 songs are unbelievably great. My tastes tend to intersect with the mainstream every 5 years or so, and I think this is one of those times.
I'll probably go into the wee hours.

Shibusashirazu Orchestra on Doug Schulkind's stream and it's kind of blowing my mind.

The new Fleet Foxes is a bit of a masterpiece. On Helplessness Blues when they transition into the Thompson-esque guitar... phew goosebumps.

I'd never heard of her up until a few days ago, because I'm just not very plugged in like that, and I'm not very into new things.  And I was ready to dislike the idea of a Robert Johnson cover with heavy drones stretched out to 14 minutes, but I don't.
In fact, I like it quite a bit.
But that's just me.

(I reserve the right to change my mind about this two days from now)

I got this and I'm listening to the first part of the album right now.  Incredible stuff.
