I'm puzzled over the poll results I heard today, with Obama at 46% and McCain at 43% (margin of error: +/- 3%), so it's a statistical tie, which given the electoral map, I tend to think means a McCain victory. It's hard for me to fathom that this is where we are headed.

No comprehensive health care reform? No meaningful change in energy policy? Staying in Iraq for 5 more years? An even more conservative Supreme Court? I'm not saying Americans are sheep, but really? Come on guys.

As we all learned from last night's show, most of America is racist.

Look on the bright side. At least the poll is not the other way around.
After next week's convention, Obama is sure to get a significant bump in the polls.
There's still hope.

Weird.  While you were writing that^, I was writing this:

Do yourself a favor and just give up your faith in the American people. Or, failing that, in the democratic process. I did, four years ago.  It's a little sad, but ultimately not as disappointing.

Yeah, I hear what you're saying. I donated a lot of money to Kerry in the hopes he would fight a rigged election. He didn't, choosing political ambition over what is right. All those people in Ohio stood outside in the cold and rain waiting to vote for him and he just let them swing in the breeze.

I have not donated a single penny to the Dems since, but I still believe that we just can't give up.

If 1984 is really coming true, Alex Jones is probably Goldstein. Ha

I guess I actually did that after the '04 election, basically. Haven't given a dime to the Democrats or Obama since then. But like Tom when a new Kevin Smith movie comes out, they've sucked me back in, and I hope for the best (but kind of expect the worst).

A little hope does no harm.  Don't let it get out of hand, though; you may be crushed come November.

I think anyone who holds very high hopes for his or her candidate, even if elected, is cruising for major disillusionment.  For American politics is a graveyard of dreams and aspirations.

I regularly think to myself when I meet a youngish person, "he/she is still at that age when his or her dreams have not yet been crushed."  That's pretty sad, isn't it?

I'm gonna make a mid-year resolution: be more positive and optimistic!

I'm the same, Fido.  I try to hold my tongue as far as possible when I'm with them.  They might as well enjoy these moments; they're are few enough of them.

Good luck with that midyear resolution.  If you keep to it, I'll amazed and envious.

Yeah, some time like 4 or 5 years ago ( I guess that would make me only 25, but still...) I came to some major league disillusionment, but weirdly, it's also helped me get some perspective on what's important in life.  When I talk to undergrads at the art school here, every once in a long while they'll say something like "You're so bitter!" but I don't feel bitter.  I'm just like "Yeah, you'll graduate, you'll get out there.  You've just gotta keep trying to make stuff.  Some people you know will hit it big really fast, others won't, a lot of people will stop making art completely.  If you can still bother yourself to create anything at all after three years, you'll be ahead of a lot of people and way behind a select few others who are either just lucky or have trust funds."  This sounds depressing to someone coming out of school, but it's really not as bad as it sounds.  When you realize you're not really God's Genius Gift to the Earth you have to re-assess why you care about what you care about, and re-invest in what is actually important to you.

Here's another conversation from work.  This happened today:

ME: So you cleaned up. Thanks.

STUDENT: Yeah, how does it look?

ME:  Pretty good.  But it still smells.

STUDENT:  Really?  What does it smell like.

ME:  Rotting food.

STUDENT: Oh Yeah.  Not too sure what we can do about that.

ME:  Probably find the rotting food and throw it out.

STUDENT: Yeah, the thing is, we wanted to start composting.  But then we started getting those little flies that fly around and lay tons of eggs in everything--?

ME:  Fruit flies?

STUDENT:  Yeah, flies.

ME:  Yeah, composting is an outdoor activity.

STUDENT:  Okay.

ME:  I reject your composting scheme.

STUDENT:  What?

ME:  Don't do that anymore.

Sheeple? I thought Marc Maron started that phrase on his defunt Air America Radio Show, Morning Sedition.

That was great radio. Are you a fan?

Yes! That show was great! Maron didn't invent "sheeple", but he incorporated it as a catchphrase for the show. He was having a bit of fun at the expense of the conspiracy-minded. Although he wasn't entirely unsympathetic to that kind of thinking. What I liked about Maron is that he was willing to question himself and his own beliefs. He tended to be less bullheaded and willfully ignorant than other political radio types.

But most of all, the show was FUNNY. Hey HaroldBlvd, you should check out this treasure trove of archived bits from "Morning Sedition":

... everybody else should check it out too. Believe it or not, Air America used to have a good show.

Best Show fans might be interested in the recurring "Sammy the Stem Cell", because it sounds like it may have been inspired by Timmy Von Trimble. But that might be coincidental ... The other bit everyone should give a try is "Rapture Watch"
