I know the president has used it, but come on, it's a dumb term. Think of another way to say that the discussion has expanded to include minor or incidental details that would only be familiar to insiders.

It's actually "insider baseball" and originally referred literally to the Congressional Baseball game and, later, to the wheelings and dealings that went on inside the dugouts and on the basepaths of the annual contest. Rep. Ron Paul (R, Texas) famously declared an end to "insider baseball" (and the small-ball managerial style of Ted Stevens [R, Alaska]) in 1979 when he hit the game's first over-the-fence home run. I've done my research, now you do yours.
