I've never got the whole crossing the legs thing unless you're wearing a short skirt.... especially for men. It's not comfortable.

It is for women.  We don't do it only out of modesty.

That is so true, Sarah, it is for women, and very uncomfortable for men like me. That's why I never wear skirts, but only muumuus or long dresses so that I'm not forced into that uncomfortable position.

I wear some form of skirt or dress 80% of the time, and heels (usually stilettos) always.  The more you wear heels, the more comfortable they get.  I know it's stupid, but gosh darn it, I just think they look sexy.

Dear Six Year Old Alien,

It's all part of the patriarchy's social control apparatus.

Sincerely,

Wait, are high heels ISAs or RSAs?  I guess ISA.

I kind of don't know what to do with my legs except to cross them sometimes. It's like they're just sitting there.

Okay, that was stupid.

When you think about it, skirts make a great deal of sense for men.  I've always thought having all those parts of yours scrunched up within a pair of trousers--or, worse, trousers plus undergarment--must be very unpleasant.  Highlanders had the right idea, it seems to me.

High heels, on the other hand, make no sense for anybody.  Though I'm not surprised you're finding them ever more comfortable, Susannah:  supposedly when one wears them regularly, one's Achilles tendon tightens up, so walking barefoot or in flats becomes uncomfortable.

If I wear heels, they're going to be super-comfortable (yes they do exist and I'm a big whiny baby with bunions and bad arches, so I'm not stretching the word "comfortable" here) and it's usually because I'm just too short for my clothes. It's cheaper to buy a pair of heels rather than shorten all my skirts or pants.

Skirts or dresses are just more comfortable than pants most of the time. At least the kind I wear... And, I think they're feminine and pretty and much more flattering for my figure than pants.

re: crossing your legs... at least for me, it becomes more comfortable to sit for long periods of time if I cross and uncross my legs. I can shift my weight around instead of having all the pressure on the center of my butt/spine.

(edit: I said "comfortable" too many times in this post. It makes me uncomfortable.)

Hence my initial statement.

Not me, man!  I want to let it all hang out!1!!

Also, no one asked, but when I was in high school I worked at the Capezio dance shoe store in Lawrenceville, NJ.  I was the only dude there and one day we were all bored and decided to see if there was a pair of high-heeled tap shoes that would fit me.  There were.

I want to say that's my last work story but really I've got about a dozen more - remind me to tell you about the time I bribed a New York City public official with a tall-boy of Bud.
Oh, good heavens. I didn’t realize. I send my condolences out to the rest of the O’Connor family.
