Anyone else going to see Built To Spill/Meat Puppets/Dinosaur Jr?
« on: September 22, 2008, 01:44:03 PM »
Just checking.  I don't get out to see live music much these days, but am making the move and seeing this 80's/90's triumvirate on Thursday night at Terminal 5.

Anyone else gonna be there?

Meat Puppets- great. Dinosaur Jr - really great.  Built to Spill- man, Perfect from Now on isn't the best album is it.  Kinda boring. BUT, once they started playing the first three songs off of Keep it Like a Secret I stopped being bored.  I would've liked to have more Dinosaur Jr. in between the ten minute waits between each BTS song. I'll stop complaining to say the show was great overall. fun time.

Built to Spill is great, but they are kinda terrible live. Every song gets a 7-minute guitar solo.

No thanks.

I saw them on Sunday.
Sunday October the 16th 1988 at the Fulham Greyhound. 19 years later to the day my daughter was born.

Also "triumvirate" was totally the wrong word to use.

But it was pretty shitty of me to say that.

Does this mean you no longer consider them tuneless sludge?

I respectfully disagree, but I also understand the amount of subjectivity that goes into this stuff. I have no idea why, but when J. Mascis plays a 7-minute solo, it does nothing for me. When Doug Martsch plays 10 different 7-minute solos, I am completely engrossed the whole time.  The notes speak to me, man!   And they're even better live. Watching Doug Martsch play guitar is one of my favorite things to see...the jerky movements, the schlubby baldness. It is delightfully non-rock star.

But the acoustics at Terminal 5? Thumbs down. I will never see a show there again. I openly admit that Built To Spill sounded like a malfunctioninh jet engine on Thursday night.

For me the best part of Perfect From Now On was seeing Will Arnett in the crowd.

I still think a lot of the stuff from their later albums isn't aging well (I don't think I ever used the expression "tuneless sludge"). Live, it's a whole other story. That guitar sound is for the ages.

I saw BTS and the Meat Puppets last spring.
The Meat Puppets left something to be desired. I think all of them were trying to rock out a little too hard all at the same time.
It was good, I mean Built To Spill rarely puts on a bad show, but their audience gets more and more aggravating every time I see them. There was a pair of older hippies behind me that were SCREAMING at the top of their lungs about drugs and mid-80s Grateful Dead setlists throughout the entire BTS set.
Then, every person from both of those bands AND the first opening band came out to play all at the same time. I dunno, I just feel like having that many guitars on stage at once is too much, even when it is skynyrd.
