I haven't seen the SNL special, but whenever they get politicians on it blows.  This is why the Daily Show pwns SNL: when they have politicians on, they actually do a semi-real interview and don't involve them in these dumb skits that are like "I'm laughing at my Self!" That's the kind of humor you save for office Christmas parties and other no-comedy-standards events.  I can't help thinking it suggests this weird parental relationship between politicians and the rest of us, like "Oh hey guys, I'm not above coming down in the basement and making a couple jokes with you for a few minutes.  All right, that's enough, time to go upstairs and run the world!  You guys have fun down here." 
Fuck that.

I think mocking our leaders is, in reality, one of our most important American traditions.  It's a bald faced expression of freedom.  Letting the target "in on the joke" to lessen the blow undermines that to some degree, I think.

If you want power, we're going to make fun of you.  And you have to grin and bear it, because that's part of how America keeps its leaders honest.

It's all fun and games, except that it kind of isn't.

Just to clarify:  I didn't post because I was worried the McCain and Palin appearances on the special last night would sway people.  I just thought they were undignified, inappropriate, and pathetic.

Agreed completely.  It won't sway any voters.  It just plain sucked.  Palin's attempts at humor are unbearable.

I did have an argument with a friend of mine, though, who was like "well at least she has a sense of humour about herself! She seems nice enough!" The fact that they could have made anyone think that for even a second makes me so mad at SNL.

Listening to Alec Baldwin, Tina Fey, and Seth Meyers talk about Palin on the show, they all went out of their way to emphasize how nice she was.  Honestly, she really didn't have any other choice but to "have a sense of humor" about herself.  If she were to take it too seriously, everyone would give her crap but if she at least pretends to go along with it, all her supporters can brag about how well she took it.  As far as McCain goes, he's always been pretty "friendly" any time I've seen him on a talk show so it's certainly not anything new for him. 

I'm going to agree with TE on this one, anyone who has their opinion swayed by SNL probably shouldn't bother voting at all (although I'm not going to go the "subhuman" route).

I wish I didn't think last night's sketch with Luda, T-Pain and Samberg-as-Blizzard Man was funny. But I did.

Samberg's dancing and slant-rhyming while Ludacris egged him on was definitely an upgrade to the tired old "corny white guy rapping" joke.

I liked that sketch as well, but I think the various incarnations of Tim McGraw's hair were the funniest part of last night's show.

Blizzard Man has always been good. I'm surprised/thankful that they haven't beat the skit to death.

Last's night's episode was terrible otherwise. I asked my wife why Tim McGraw is a sex symbol and she said he should keep his hat on.
