Jay Johnston

He was one of my favorites from Mr. Show and he's awesome in the DVD commentary. I know he's friends with PFT also - have you ever thought of having him on the show? Anyone know if he's a Best Show listener?

Since Jay Johnston is the best, I concur he'd be great* on The Best Show.



*although the best guests/interviews are always from people who know/are friends with Tom, so there is that possible obstacle to overcome.

Jay Johnston is really something else. I defy you not to laugh at the Independent Nations Games, The Story of Everest, or Who Greenlit Coupon the movie (all from Mr. Show). Those are some of the funniest things I've seen cuz of him. I would love to hear him on the show if possible!

He's great, it would be cool to hear him on the show.  I love the story David Cross tells in the Mr. Show "What Happened?" book about Jay coming out at lunch to find a boot on his car, calmly getting some tools and dissassembling it, and then heading back inside to "eat his five pound lunch". 

And the story Jay tells about Todd Glass being one of the cops in the "Take Back the Streets" sketch and what a dick he was because he got weirdly overenthusiastic when roughing Jay up.

I, too, am a big fan of man also known as Choo-Choo the Hurkey Jerky Dancer.

In "Mr. Show - What Happened"? I still remember laughing really, really hard when I first read the story about Jay's tipsy uncle coming to visit his family after a Cubs game, which ended up being the inspiration of the Everest sketch.

Jay has also had some really great scenes in some of the more recent episodes of the Sarah Silverman Program.

In "Mr. Show - What Happened"? I still remember laughing really, really hard when I first read the story about Jay's tipsy uncle coming to visit his family after a Cubs game, which ended up being the inspiration of the Everest sketch.

Everest was actually based on a true story. I've mentioned it before to people, but nobody really cared. Now I will bore you with the tale. One day in a pitch meeting I got on some tangent and told a story of a third or fourth cousin of mine, Clarence Tamalunas. He is an imposing figure of a man, 6'6"; long hair, and a big red beard. He would periodically show up at my mom's house in the summer in Chicago, as we lived two blocks from Wrigley Field. He would drop in having just been to a game and he'd usually be a bit drinky, you know, thirsted...drunkle. This one particular day, he showed up and was regaling us of a story that was less than memorable. What occurred next, though, would be the stuff of what I am writing about now. We kept our Weber grill in the kitchen as opposed to the back porch because, otherwise, 'the people that take' would come. So, as he talked, he noticed that we all sat upon kitchen stools. Now, I have never gotten drunk at a Cubs' game, but I imagine it can be pretty exhausting, as he seemed to desire a place to sit. Out of the corner of his eye, I guess, he saw the grill beside him and decided to rest his lumbering frame. Well, he sat upon it and it took off As he fell to the floor, he reached back to catch himself only to grab onto two large wooden printer trays that were being used to house an untold number of trinkets and baubles. He ripped them both from the wall and they both emptied and flew all over the kitchen floor. After about ten minutes of picking up all the pieces and setting them carefully back in the frame, we all had a good honest chuckle. Shortly thereafter, my grandfather, Bud, entered from the other room and asked what the huge crash had been. My cousin Clarence took the reigns and began to explain that he was telling this story, and, in the middle, he went to sit back on this stool that was not a stool, and, in the midst of his explanation he acted out sitting and lost his balance and did it again. The grill took off, and he fell back grabbing at the wall - and knocking everything down again. We laughed until we had to pick the little bleeping things up again. So, that is the real story of the story of Everest Do with it what you will, but, always remember, wear a rubber. Always. Everyday.

Jay Johnston made me cry laughing multiple times on the Mr. Show commentaries. I had to pause it to regain myself when him and PFT redubbed certain sketches. They should seriously do that on some professional level, using a rifftrax type set-up.

I used to see Jay Johnston (rocking a serious 'stache) all the time at the Little Joy, a hipster 'dive' bar (only divey because it was actually really gross) out here in L.A.  this is the same bar i used to see Kiefer Sutherland at.  they might still be there... i don't go to that bar much anymore.  if i do see him again, i'll assault him with Best Show questions.
