Jon Wurster on... Bloomberg Radio?
« on: November 12, 2008, 11:16:50 PM »
I was just listening to Bloomberg Radio's "On the Economy" podcast, and I noticed an economist who was being interviewed, Arthur Laffer, sounds amazingly like Jon Wurster.

The pitch of the voice is slightly off, but the similarity of cadence and diction is just uncanny.

He's also a Reaganomics-Friedman monetarist nut job, and everything he said was pretty much what Wurster's Republican characters would say on The Best Show.

On top of that, the journalist from Bloomberg interviewing him was Tom Keene, and at several points throughout the interview, this guy would begin his sentence by saying "Well, Tom."

Unfortunately this is a real person. He is an economist who was in the Reagan administration. He came up with the idea that lowering taxes could increase government revenue. The idea is called the Laffer Curve and it says that there's a point where you tax people too much and they won't work anymore. His policies were really just a way to justify supply-side economics where the government cuts taxes for corporations and rich people "to create growth".

Now that trickle-down economics has been proven to be awful by our current problems, Arthur Laffer went on Real Time with Bill Maher a couple weeks ago and was distancing himself from these horrible economic policies. Bill tried to call him on it too, saying "Isn't your name in the theory? It's called the Laffer Curve! Now you're saying it wasn't your idea or you don't completely believe in this theory?"

It would be awesome though if Wurster characters (new or old) started showing up on other radio programs. It's actually pretty easy to position yourself as an expert and get on the air. Make it happen!

I get what you're saying about sounding like Wurster. I remember hoping a few years ago that Wurster would create some obnoxious right-wing Republican ideologue and I was thinking that it would come out sounding exactly like that interview with Laffer.

This clip of Peter Schiff being laughed at over the years on Fox News (before being proved totally right) starts off with Laffer making an ass of himself.

Here's something Schiff wrote at the time:

"In my most recent appearance on CNBC I debated Arthur Laffer, who gained fame during the Reagan administration for sketching his controversial "Laffer Curve" on a cocktail napkin. The encounter reaffirmed my belief that the same napkin would probably be large enough to hold the sum total of his economic wisdom."

He has several, most notably Maurice Kern.

Ben Stein is such a shithead.

There was something deeply satisfying about seeing Stein recommend Merrill Lynch as an 'astonishingly well run company' alongside the graphic 'Ben Owns Shares in This Company'.  He should've stuck to quiz shows.

Congrats, Samir.  Use your new non-power non-wisely.  You'll be glad you didn't.
