Don't know about you, but I love this movie.  What do other people think?

I literally watched it twice yesterday.  I netflix'd it but I think this might be one that buy some time.  So many classic one-liners.  Fred Simmons is such a fucking asshole, but somehow you feel for him.

I was kind of blown away by it to be honest.

not only was it really funny but it had such a great style. It was shot in that indie handheld video style that is so often used by weepy indie dramas or overly verbose, tedious indie quirk films but it was a pretty straight forward comedy. I think if it had been done in like a big budget, high key, mainstream comedy way it would taken alot away from the film's charm. It has a realism that you never see in comedies.

I think I need to watch it again. There were 4-5 exceptionally funny lines in it, and probably twice as many more good quotable fodder, but I was a bit underwhelmed by it overall. Maybe all the hype from people telling me how great it was? I enjoyed the pacing in it a lot though, and Danny McBride killed it.

Wait, it sounds like I did like it - what'm I saying?

So many of the great lines aren't even all that funny in them selves, It's the way they are delivered.
Like "Well, get un-tired.  Because it's two for one crab legs at Caaaaptiaaan Orlanders."
Also, I think the movie has a lot of heart.  The guy is a Factory-wrapped Douche, but you feel for him anyway.

I adore Fred Simmons' obsession with awesomeness.  Sure he loses his way when his wife and his hero let him down, but then he finds that he is "king of the demo" and learns to love himself again.

I was so surprised by Danny Mcbride in this.

having seen his many performances in comedies this summer I was expecting something way more broad and not really that funny. i. e. Tropic Thunder

he really walked a razors edge with this character just barely reining it back enough to keep Simmons funny and wierd but not letting him be an over the top cartoon version of a karate instructor.

he really needs to find more projects like this that showcase his talent

the whole time i was watching it I was comparing it to Adam Sandler in Punch Drunk Love, playing a really funny and fully developed character with out taking it to the stupid broad "adam sandlerish" level yet he feels like the only one could play the character.

The hype caused me to feel underwhelmed, but I loved the Eastbound and Down pilot and will certainly see all McBride's future work. I'm pretty sure the DVD has an alternate ending (where McBride goes out to see his wife/girlfriend character at the bleachers outside the school) that I thought was totally awesome.

I know Colin mentioned Tropic Thunder... Did anybody else here really love that movie? The name keeps popping up on so many best-of 2008 type lists and I really don't get it. I felt all the other big comedies (Sarah Marshall, Role Models, Step Brothers) were much better.

I think that Hype was attempted for this movie, but it didn't really take off.  It was by no means "this year's napoleon dynamite" (as I've heard it referred to) as far a hype goes.
As far as the alternate ending, I'm glad it's just an extra.  That other ending was a bit do dark.
As far as the deleted scenes go, there are some good ones that should have been kept.  The extra stuff with Jody Hill really explained a lot more about McBride's character and made him a bit more believable.
It made it more believable that Simmons was at one point "the king of the demo", and that life had kind of drained him.

Of the handful of the big comedies that I actually saw (FSM, Role Models), it was the worst.  Coogan had some funny moments and Downey was pretty good but overall it didn't really make me laugh.  The Tom Cruise stuff was the absolutely worst.  Just looking at that terrible makeup and listening to him made me cringe.

that guy is funny as shit.  i wish they came up with a better story for the movie though.  by the end i wasnt laughing as much as at the beginning.  just kinda petered out to me.  but that guy was really funny for sure.
