The difference between the north and the south is that in the south, this wouldn't be news. It would be a dessert your grandma created the recipe for.
No, the difference is that the South has actually had to face up to its racist past, to make amends. To endure scrutiny. The rest of the country, most of which has no idea what it's talking about, gets to make stupid statements like the one above. And wallow in its own racism.
My state hadn't voted for a Democrat since 1976. NC voted FOR the first black major-party candidate, when it wouldn't vote for the effete jackass snob 4 years ago (hell, I voted for Kerry, but NC didn't).
