I hate Julian Schnabel's broken plate bullshittery almost as much as I hate Damien Hirst's factory dots and gussied-up vivisection and taxidermy. I will give him this much: His last two movies were brilliant.

I know more than a few people who have come to same conclusion independently: Julian Schnabel should burn all of his paintbrushes and throw out all of his canvases and never ever pick up another dinner plate. Seriously. Ever. He should just make movies. His last two were brilliant. The Diving Bell and the Butterfly was beautifully shot and made me cry like a baby.

And regarding the video? I thought Morley Safer saying "a doper" was going to be the highlight. Oh boy was I wrong. He certainly thinks very highly of himself, and it's no surprise he's unreceptive of criticism. He can't handle the idea that someone doesn't embrace him as a true genius. It just doesn't gel with his self-perception, so his brain shuts down, and he starts pouting and questioning Morley Safer's journalistic integrity. Yeah, okay, he's on a show which features Old Man Rooney, so he's on thin ice there I guess, but STILL! What a narcissistic fuckface.

In summation, will someone take away his paintbrushes and chain him to a camera or something. THANKS.

Can I also say that Julian Schnabel looks like a total dink with those piss-colored lenses.  It reminds me of those awful transitional lenses that take twenty minutes to convert back to translucent after coming inside on a sunny day.  Speaking of transitional lenses, why not just get a pair of prescription sunglasses?  They make people look like they're dying.

Anyway, Julian Schnabel.  Lose the lenses.  You're no Godard, son.

They may both be pricks, but Hughes' takedown of Schnabel's memoirs was classic. Honestly I can see why he got angry when Hughes' name was brought up -- everything he ever wrote about Schnabel was incredibly vicious (though deserved).

I had photo-grey lenses between 1998-2002. Never again. Once you're inside, they never become totally clear, so you're stuck with this terrible in-between shade of brown.
