Halfway through this and enjoying plenty of Spinal Tap-like moments so far, but I guess that's a given. Anyone else watched it?

Me too. I was very young and hadn't started going to shows yet.  By the time I did, I'd had plenty of stage diving practice onto couch cushions.

Nite Flight was THE BEST!

If you're just now seeing it, I doubt you have the cultural context to put it in and a lot of what they talk about must seem ludicrous.  While yes, it is silly, it was a fact that at that time if you looked like that you could expect to get in a fight with someone at any time or have bottles thrown at you from random moving cars, etc.

Well, I grew up outside DC in the 80s if that counts as 'cultural context'.    I guess I haven't cared much about DC/LA bands of that era in many years and I rented the DVD from Netflix on a whim. I didn't think it was all ludicrous, but looking back on it as an older person now, you pick up on some of the really unintentionally funny stuff that comes out of the mouths of young idealistic people. Nothing new there. If it makes any difference, I also rented The Last Waltz recently and laughed throughout it more than I do at comedies (esp when Van Morrison was doing high-kicks and splits). Hard to get that reverent about music docs, I guess.

I do sympathize with anyone getting mistreated for looking different, but I enjoyed the scene where they're in a late-night diner, banging coffee cups on the counter, generally being loud and toting a video camera and then all shocked and indignant when the older French lady wouldn't serve them.

I guess what I meant was if you're just now seeing it you probably weren't running around with a mohawk back then.  I wasn't trying to attack you.  Sorry if it came off that way. My point was pretty apropos of nothing in retrospect.  Everything in that movie is absurd, even when they're speaking the truth.  And, yes, Van Morrison in Last Waltz is a comedy genius.

Ahh no, I didn't think you were attacking anyone. I just wanted to clarify that I'd been familiar with those bands/that scene/those ideas for a long time (it was inescapable if you were around DC), but by the time I owned my own VCR or DVD player, I'd long since stopped caring about that stuff and never bothered to rent it. I never ran around with a mohawk, but plenty of my friends did and I always struggled to keep a straight face when one of them was going on about politics or DIY or whatever was on the script they always seemed to be reading off of. I'm glad young people carve out their own lifestyles and don't always listen to authority figures, but damned if almost everything doesn't seem corny after about 20 years, no matter how rebellious it seemed. Sometimes it even seems corny right then, in the moment.

Wow, I'd completely forgot how Rad both those shows were.  It's funny how references like "Up All Night" make you feel young for A second or two?
