why do the things i hate occupy so much of my time?
« on: May 19, 2009, 09:38:13 PM »
"much" being a relative thing, anyhow.

like this johnny ryan guy, who draws funnystrips for vice and is never fucking funny fucking ever. and his art stinks, and fuck him! but for some reason, i just found myself doing google searches for johnny ryan interviews, which makes absoutely no sense, and is a total misuse of the limited amount of time i have on this planet. why. why!

other things i hate that i find myself continuously drawn into:

- "i'm stopping smoking" threads on message boards. i don't smoke, never have, and sort of actively hate the act/industry/etc. but for some reason i cannot NOT look at such threads when they (inevitably) appear on one of the few message boards i go to.

- new "my year of flops" wannabes at/on/in the onion's av club. not all of them are that bad, but few (if any) approach the giddy heights of MYOF. and most seem like total stabs at eventually landing a book on the remainder table at barnes & noble.

I do the same thing with bad theology.  Every United Methodist pastor gets a subscription (you can't cancel it) to Good News magazine, a magzine devoted to the ways in which gays are destroying the universe, which is only six thousand years old.  I read it cover to cover each month, even though it makes me want to punch a hole in a wall.  I tell myself it's because I need to be able to respond to my parishioners if they read it, but they don't, and I know they don't.  Also, I listen to new Beck albums.  Same furiosity.

Along those lines, I bought a sampler of Chick Tracts. It's insane, you send them $16 and you seriously get about 90 of them. And then you randomly get new ones in the mail. I intend to someday found the James Chick Players Repertory Theatre.

How I'd love to see that! I am obsessed with those things.

I read them online.  I've only ever seen one "in the wild" - in a gas station bathroom in central Virginia in the early 90s.

I like "Somebody Goofed."

Johnny Ryan makes me feel the same way.  I dunno, I have no grudge against the guy, good for him for getting pretty popular-ish with something that clearly someone is enjoying, but seeing his stuff praised just makes me unreasonably angry.  Especially on BoingBoing, but about half my time on that site is spent being annoyed already, so that might be contributing.

That would be me. I think he's funny. But you don't have to! (I expect he's used to it.)

Whenever I read the newspaper, I always read all twenty or so of the comics, even though Get Fuzzy is the only one that has ever made me laugh.

I think I've become obsessed with bad comic strips, I mean I have Leroy Lockhorn as my avatar.

Because you enjoy disliking things? Or because you're a curmudgeon? I'd say those are probably the most likely reasons.

I think there is something to be said for someone who, in this age, still attempts to make bodily functions and the places they emanate from all kinds of transgressive. It's like bands who still play ska.

You know, you can read almost all of them online.  It's not the same, but it your sixteen bucks could go to some other cause than evil.  http://www.chickcomics.com/  The JCPRT sounds like a greta idea.  If we did it here, no one would realize it was ironic.  Good luck with that.

neither? i really take no pleasure from things that stink. except maybe weird cheeses and the like. and i don't even think i'm that curmudgeonly. i genuinely enjoy enjoying things, and there are enough good/great things in the world that actively seeking out certain types of crummy stuff shouldn't even be an option.

maybe it's this: i just need to understand WHY this stuff exists in the first place. i dunno. try again!

I went to the e-Tix site on friday and ALMOST bought a single ticket to the next night's Dan Deacon show. I just kind of wanted to throw myself into the belly of the beast, try and drop all preconceived notions of this artist and see if I could be won over.

I balked.

At first, I thought you meant that puppet guy with the Muslim skeleton puppet.  That guy played here last weekend.  No fucking thank you.

Pidgeon, the fact that you know that dude's name is Leroy, and that you told me, totally makes up for your hatred of animals and old people and the other thing that got on my nerves that I forgot about because actually I do not care at all.

I love both Jonny Ryan and Jack Chick, but after reading a whole bunch of their comics in a row I want to kill myself, even though I'd been laffing the whole time.

Also, I hate the thing I have chosen and in which I have a moderately successful career, despite incredibly long odds.  What to do, what to do?
Oh, good heavens. I didn’t realize. I send my condolences out to the rest of the O’Connor family.
