New Jersey Bands
« on: June 25, 2009, 12:50:08 AM »
Tom,

I figure you'd be the best shot at helping me out, but everyone is free to contribute. I'm planning on doing a radio show with strictly New Jersey artists. Part because I feel out of place here in Connecticut, partly because I have a bone to pick with someone who doesn't respect the wealth of talent born, bred, and based in the Garden State. I'm trying to avoid lame stuff (IE Bon Jovi) and this is what I have so far. I need a few more to fill out the rest of the show, but here's my list:

Yo La Tengo
Springsteen
Titus Andronicus
Ted Leo
the Feelies
Gaslight Anthem
The Wrens
The Individuals
Redman
Parliament
Frat Dad
Monster Magnet
Screaming Females
Ducktails
When I Was 12
Real Estate
The Black Hollies

Any help anyone?

The Vivian Girls have New Brunswick roots
Roadside Graves out of Metuchen have a new record out
A lot of good punk bands in NB now - Screamales, Silent Way, Seasick, Zhenia Golov, Mirrors and Wires!
R. Stevie Moore lives in Jersey.
1910 Fruitgum Company
Chisel

Being from CT, but going to school in New Jersey I'm almost willing to say New Jersey Rules, Connecticut drools.
The music, at least, is way better. Who does CT have outside of like Magik Markers? Hatebreed?

I think Clap Your Hands and Say, Yeah! (or whatever the dumb punctuation is) hails from Weslyan. Not sure where they're from individually though.

Rob Hyman, lead singer of the Hooters, though, did go to my high school. The co-writer of "All You Zombies" graced those hallways.

Any Jersey Fresh fans out there?

Also, the East Orange hip-hop scene: Queen Latifah, Naughty By Nature, The Fugees/Lauryn Hill.
Oh, good heavens. I didn’t realize. I send my condolences out to the rest of the O’Connor family.

A friend of mine saw Trixter at one of those Jersey shore summer extravaganzas ages ago, but he's never forgotten their intro: "Give it up for Trixter!" It's been a running gag of his ever since. At the most inopportune time he'll just say, "Give it up for Trixter!" It never fails to bring a smile. Give it a try.
See God, Kai
