Thanks, Larry The Cable Guy!
« on: July 03, 2009, 01:56:00 PM »
Something I'm adding to my long list of reasons I plan on moving from Nebraska soon:

The city of Lincoln (where I live) is having it's 4th of July celebrations tonight (the 3rd) - the big fireworks display and all that - because Larry The Cable Guy is doing a show at Memorial Stadium on the 4th and doesn't want to have that interrupt his show. I guess Comedy Central is taping it and they're only charging $4 to get in so the whole stupid state is going. Apparently he's a Hometown Hero.

I know this may come as a shock to some people but Larry The Cable Guy is not actually Southern. He grew up in a small Nebraska town until he was a sophmore in high school when his family moved to Florida - and he went to an uppity private school. I know! Shocking! It's all an act!

Anyway - I'm having my very first First Friday art show downtown tonight and now families from all over will be taking away what little parking this city provides us to watch the fireworks and most likely not take in any of the First Friday shows all over downtown.

So, yeah, thanks Larry.

I support Dan Whitney here. One should never disturb an artist at work.

I'm convinced most people forgot he's doing a character
I think he forgot to, since he does it in interviews.

Eh, I don't blame him. Less confusing for most of his target audience. To be fair, Sacha Baron Cohen does like 90% of his interviews in character too.

So did GG, before he passed on.  Maybe more than 90%.
I really don't appreciate your sarcastic, anti-comedy tone, Bro!

As much as I hate to defend this lowest common denominator vampire, it looks to me like in actual interviews as opposed to promotional showcases like The Tonight Show, he doesn't do the shtick (or at least attempts not to):

I suppose that given this I can understand him a bit better, even if his product is not something I would ever choose to enjoy. I'd wager that Mr. Whitney is a business mastermind who should be included among other legitimate, self-made comedians, no matter how much one would want to lump him in with the Mencias and Learys of the world. Like a McDonalds or a WalMart, he found the button that siphons money out of the largest demographic of Americans. I don't know that I can blame this mediocre talent for slamming that button as many times as possible before it breaks. Adapting a dog-tired stereotype character was his one shot as a performer. When it paid off, I'm sure it surprised and disappointed him just as much as it did us.
