Hard Time Listening to Myself
« on: August 05, 2009, 12:24:00 PM »
I've only called into the show a handful of times (5 or 6 times) over the past three or four years but I really have a hard time listening to podcasts in which I called. I dread hearing myself. The weird thing is, its not the sound of my voice or anything like that (I do some radio here at school). It's just too weird to hear myself. There are a couple episodes with great topics, that I've been reluctant to listen to again (ie: the list of talented people) because I can't stand hearing myself (and I even had a good call on that one!).

Is anyone else the same way where they avoid listening to shows they've called? And for people who call more regularly, did you experience this at any point?

I have a hard time hearing the sound of my own voice, but I am full of self loathing in general.

When I listen to the podcasts, I'll listen to the first few seconds of my call before I am overwhelmed with embarrassment and fast-forward to the next caller. It can be pretty excruciating. But don't all people dislike the sound of their voice played back to them? I thought it was a psychological thing that happens with almost everyone.

Everyone hates hearing the sound of their own voice.  If they don't, they're an asshole.

Like this guy.

I called once and was mortified by the sound of my own voice.

I was mortified at first. I still can't listen to the first call. But I was also geeking out. Once I calmed down I think I was more tolerable. (I'm also kind of an asshole)

I once said to my brother "I can't stand the sound of my own voice".  He replied "how do you think we all feel".  Nice!

No Erika you're not nasally enough to be an asshole.  You've gotta do more coke.

I don't love the sound of my own voice, but I don't mind it, either.  I can even recognize that, objectively speaking, it's quite a nice one.

Guess I'm an asshole.  Not the first clue.

Makes sense.  I mean look at you avatar, Sarah!  Erika now you know who to talk to for some nose candy!  Wink wink nudge nudge.  Am I right?

(What I meant was you should talk to Sarah about obtaining cocaine.)

Huh, it never occurred to me that that's what drew me to that picture.

I am okay with listening to most of my calls, except one where I did my imitation of Morrissey. CRINGE.

Anytime I hear a call where I've called in to talk to Galifianakis and I say "I'm a huge fan" I kind of want to shoot myself in the face. It's not what I'm saying, it's just how it sounds coming out of my mouth. Ugh.

It's been awhile since I called, but I always had to skip past myself when listening to a podcast or archived episode. I can't even listen to my one really good call.
I'll probably go into the wee hours.

I did an imitation on the show once. Heard it the one time right after I hung up due to the delay. I've listened to that show 3 or 4 times and I always have to fast foward through my call. My other calls I'm fine with.
