It's too bad there's no way to insure that he'll ONLY drum. Keeping him behind the kit and away from a microphone would be the best thing for everybody who loves music.

I don't know. I think "No Jacket Required" is a decent album.

Nec13, I got your back. Face Value's got some decent stuff on it, specifically The Roof is Leaking. And he was a fantastic drummer as a younger man, as anybody who's listened to the first couple of Brand X knows.

I saw Phil Collins in concert three times: Once solo and twice with Genesis. He and Chester Thompson did a pretty good job drumbing. This news makes me sad.  I would never deny that Phil Collins has saturated the radio with the musical equivalent of Stinking Bishop cheese, but he did beat the shit out of the drums with Genesis back in the 70's.

That is the sign of a life well lived.

Phil Collins played on some of those early Brian Eno albums, so he should have earned a little bit of "hipster cred."

Here are my thoughts on this topic. I think there is a lot of animus towards Phil Collins because a lot of his solo material is utter pap and also because it's so ubiquitous on adult contemporary stations and in supermarkets, dentist's offices, etc. Of course, a fair number of his songs are terrible. However, "Face Value" and "No Jacket Required" are great albums. And as you said Dave, he is a fantastic percussionist.

But I cannot and will not defend his acting career, because it's indefensible.

As was I. Peter Gabriel-era Genesis was basically all I listened to during high school. However, ten years later, I've found that I have no real desire to listen to any prog rock again.

I guess I burned myself out on it.

A. I never thought of Peter Gabriel (creator of the three albums Peter Gabriel, Peter Gabriel and Peter Gabriel) as particularly effeminate before, but he put early Jonny Greenwood to shame with that particular getup. 

B. I can take or leave most prog.  I listened to that whole thing and it was just Grateful Dead style noodlin' about Old King Cole.  Meh.

C.  No one ever talks about the most talented Genesis solo artist, who deserved the most success but didn't get it.  Ah, well.  Every generation blames the one before.

I believe he also appears on ALL THINGS MUST PASS, though it might be uncredited.

No question that he's an amazing drummer. I know he rather ably filled John Bonham's seat at some appearance with Led Zeppelin. Live Aid, maybe?
