Our Dog Kind of Attacked. What to do??
« on: October 22, 2009, 05:39:04 PM »
I thought maybe some FOTs would have some feedback about our situation, since many of us are dog lovers. This is a long story so bear with me...

We got our dog, Lucy, from a shelter about 6 months ago. She is a 2 year old pit bull/sight-hound (not sure what kind) mutt. She is the sweetest and gentlest dog with people, is very affectionate and mellow at home. She gets along with most dogs too, but there have been 3 disturbing incidents within the 6 months we've had her. The first was a 4-dog fight at a dog run. All 4 dogs were at each others' throats, and we had no idea how it happened. Lucy had small puncture wounds on her neck from a bite, but she fought back ferociously too. This traumatized us but Lucy seemed to go back to normal afterward, and the wounds healed fine - and we don't bring her to the dog run anymore. After that, we were more cautious around other dogs, and in a few months, we began to allow her to play with dogs at the park, after an initial period to make sure they were friendly toward each other.  The second incident was at my sister's house, who has 3 dogs of her own. The dogs seemed to be getting along ok, but when we went inside, Lucy had one of the dogs by the throat and wouldn't let go. This was really our fault, we sort of took it for granted that she was ok because she had been playing with dogs all weekend with perfect success. The dog she bit is an older, grouchy dog, but much smaller than her. After this, we committed to more socialization training for the next couple of months, and again, she seemed to be completely comfortable around other dogs and really loves playing with most of them. So last weekend, after going to the park and socializing with her leash on for a couple months, we let her off the leash there. There were 2 dogs there that she was getting along with nicely. Then, the owner of the other dogs picked up a stick and dangled it while Lucy and 1 other dog jumped at it, then he threw it and they both ran for it - and in a split second, Lucy had the other dog by the throat and would not let go. In all of these situations, she didn't growl, snarl, show teeth, or any signs that we could identify as warning signs of aggression. When we finally got the them apart, the other was ok, no blood or anything, despite its yelps that had us completely terrified.

So...now we are at the point where we have to either accept that she is not safe with other dogs, or try whatever we can do to rehabilitate her. We can't afford professional training right now, but eventually we will. We just got a muzzle, which we probably should have had before. The whole situation is breaking our hearts! Are we irresponsible dog owners? Can Lucy be rehabilitated to get along with all dogs? I've been researching training tips and stuff to deal with dog aggression. I guess we have a long road ahead of us and should be more patient. :-(

Well thanks for reading this if you've gotten this far!

Oi, this is what I fear happening - I am going to be getting a dog soon I think myself. Hard to know what software is loaded into a shelter dog, if you know what I mean.

Sounds to me like she's trying to establish her alpha position with the other dogs. The fact that she never breaks skin & just holds on really sounds like something dogs do to try and establish dominance. And the fact that she didn't break her hold even when another dog broke her skin? She's a tough one. My male cat, who is 13, has fought every cat in his territory continuously his entire life, everywhere I've ever lived. He constantly comes home with scratches and nicks, or sometimes more vicious fights which have nicked his ears and stuff like that. It's a never ending job, because it's hardwired life or death stuff, even in pampered pets.

What did the other dogs do when she got them by the neck? Did they flop on their backs at all, or did they keep at it? Honestly, I think this is normal behavior, scary but normal. I think you guys probably have to establish dominance over her thru training.

It may have to do with the number of dogs.  She may feel threatened and she might go after, what she perceives as, the weakest one.

Just a theory.

I should mention that with the dog at my sister's, she did injure him. There was blood - a gash behind his ear. The other dogs just yelped and cried. With my sister's dog, she didn't pin him down, she actually shook him a little and wouldn't let go. That's what really scared the shit out of us. It didn't seem like the normal dominant dog pinning down kind of thing, it was more attack-like.

Also, she is fully trained with us. We have established dominance at home, and she responds to all our commands--she sits, stays, comes when called, heels, goes and lays down when we tell her, if we're playing with a toy she will 'drop it' on command, she isn't food or toy aggressive with humans...she is the perfect, most well behaved dog when we are home and when she is on a leash. You can pick her up, the vet can do whatever to her, and she is ok with it. Basically she is completely trusting toward humans, but not with dogs.

I agree that it must be dominance-related, and trust related. And who knows what she's been through before we got her.

Yeah - Frix is probably right about the feeling threatened part then ... more training but now inside a pack of other dogs. I'm curious how you work it out ... I sympathize about having to put it off due to $$$. You'll be able to fix it soon, though!

I think it would be safest to keep Lucy away from other dogs.  It's great that she doesn't hurt people, though.  I wouldn't feel guilty.  You tried.

My advice would be to keep her away from other dogs, at least until you get the training. I'm not saying to keep her isolated or anything, but when you take her to the park or on walks, don't let her off leash.

I'll probably go into the wee hours.

Some dogs just don't do well with other dogs. My friend had the nicest border collie I've ever met. SWEETEST most well-trained dog. Would rip up another dog in a minute, though...

I thought about getting a goat, but what if my goat attacks other goats?

Oh, well, I guess it'll still be just me.
