When proven wrong, what else is there to do?
« on: November 11, 2009, 10:21:20 PM »
This post serves as a public self-flagellation for an earlier post of mine in which I pined for a simpler time.  In that post, I suggested that I (and perhaps others) would prefer a few weeks of the Best Show sans celebrities; just Tom and the mic.  Well, all I can say after the November 3rd powerhouse (which I just finished) is that I was unequivocally wrong.

WRONG! WRONG! WRONG!

Paul F., John H., and Mr. Reese's Pieces -  that was a GREAT SHOW!  I kept trying to figure out how to describe it as I was listening to it to a non-listener (because it was so perfect that it seemed REALLY IMPORTANT that more people hear it), and at some point I realized that it wasn't important at all if anybody else ever enjoyed it.  It was a perfect 3 hour span, and I was lucky to have received it in the right state of mind, at the right time, and within the right context.  WOO!

Mr. Sharpling, THAT was great radio, and I'll never doubt you again.

May your beard grow long and white (figuratively),

Don't sweat it.  Just wait a few weeks and then start a new thread apologizing for misspelling Tom's name.

I have one small complaint related to this. Very small.

Having three guests (or more) on is great, but it spends much less time on each, especially new people like David Reese and John Mulaney. I think it's especially bad for people like those two who were new and not really used to the show and they don't say much or get talked over.

Who is this "Mr. Sharpling" that you speak of?

Maybe I'm just overthinking but it seemed like David Rees and John Hodgeman are quite tight, and maybe Mr. Rees wanted a guide/chaperone for his first TBSOWFMU visit.  I hope to hear him as a solo guest in the future and now that he and Tom. have broken bread, maybe we'll see.

Just finished reading Oscar Wao again. I think Junot Diaz would be a great guest for Tom. He's a huge comic book fan, NJ native, and is smart as anything.  He's not PFT, Patton or Hodgeman-funny but he "has a certain wit" and tells good stories.

While that might be true to some degree, I think it affords newer guests with an opportunity to see "how things are done". With Mulany and Rees they had PFT and Macs to sort of break them in. I can imagine that being on the air solo w/ Tom could be intimidating. Not saying that Tom is intimidating, as much as being on the radio could be intimidating, and (possibly) being unfamiliar with the way the show runs could be intimidating. Three hours, with (pretty much) no breaks, no commercials, live? Sounds kind of scary. So I think those guys (assuming they had a good time) would be more ready to go one-on-one with Tom/you (us) people.

That being said, the more guests, the merrier. As much as I love the comedic stylings of S&W, bringing new people into the mix is always fun, or at least interesting.

(ps - you misspelled "Rees" and everyone else seems to be pointing that out, so I decided to join in because I want to be one of the cool kids)
