Did the 12/5 SNL rip off the Best Show?
« on: December 06, 2009, 12:11:49 AM »
There was just a sketch on SNL that was eerily similar to the entire Gathering of the Juggalos segment back in, what, July? From the second it started, I felt like something was up. Even had helicopters spraying stuff on people.

I'll post a link to the video whenever it shows up online.

I thought the same thing. Some of the band names were funny though. Thurdersex and Gunt.

What really stuck out to me was mentioning spraying people with viruses? from the helicopter, without mentioning the helicopter rides or anything like that. That was what really struck me as shenanigans.

I think they call it an "homage." The stilts thing was hilarious.

I thought it funny enough to tweet about. Nasim played the girl from the trailer to perfection. Everyone gets a pitchfork!

Agreed, Kadon.  I thought it was funny and then they made the "helicopters spraying viruses" joke and I thought, "Wait just one what-the-who!?"

My wife was then quite worried as to why my enjoyment of such an otherwise benign sketch took a nosedive so quickly with me, as if my grandmother had been killed by a helicopter-dispensed virus.

Linear thinking or straight-up joke jackery?  The world...may never know.

Still, between Mrs. Potato Dick and sex with the Iron Sheik, it had its moments.

I had a bad feeling as soon as it started and sort of expected it to play out like that. Kind of kept me from enjoying it.

That being said, you know, maybe "ripped off" wasn't the best phrase to use. But, I don't think this is entirely, eh, kosher?

Just caught this on the hulu. Not only is this months behind, the jokes aren't really that piercing ... it's just a bunch of rips on band names.

Here's the URL to the video on hulu (a hyperlink OR NORMAL LINK, WOW just inserts some awful embedded player, so deal with it): hulu.com/watch/113213/saturday-night-live-underground-festival

I'm sure lots of people made fun of the Gathering of the Juggalos video. The festival only happened 6 months ago. Seriously the preview video was being made fun of so much, it's not even on YouTube anymore. Nobody was ripping off Tom by making fun of such an easy target.

Here's Tom and Paul talking about it:

Tom/PFT > SNL

I enjoyed Gunt because I could imagine the guys in Gunt high-fiving each other over how great their name is.

Here's what puzzles me: there are so many incredibly talented people on SNL (on screen and in the writing room). Why is it so meh? I know what Bob O says and that seems clear to me, but, even so, shouldn't it at least be a little bit better? I laugh more at Harold night at the UCB and I'm not that big into Improv.

P.W.

@ Keith: If it's not the talent, it's the writers. Now that Tom's unemployed, maybe he can go write high-brow for SNL.

Fresh never tasted so good!

I imagine there's a lot of pressure in the producing/directing arena there, where they push a lot of formulaic sketches that regularly reoccur. Kirsten Wig, even though everyone loves her, seems to be doing a lot of them. The fast talker, the little kid who looks like Little Orphan Annie, the Target lady. I figure there's someone in charge there saying, "THIS WORKED BEFORE, SO KEEP DOING IT, IT'S GREAT TV."

But then you have Samberg and the Lonely Island bunch who can essentially go off on their own and really carry the whole show.

But... I never get tired of Keenan's ZUT ALORS!

What do you think about the portion about spraying people from the helicopters with viruses, though? Wasn't that a little weird?

Good lord, I hope he doesn't.
