I would like to wholeheartedly NOT recommend Bruno. Worst crap I saw this year. Turned it off after 40 minutes because I could feel myself becoming dumber.

I say this having enjoyed Borat. I just think Bruno was using the same tired idea and bumping it up around 98 notches.

I'm not looking forward to seeing it, but apparently one of my friends gave me a heads up that the commentary track (where Cohen is not in-character) is pretty interesting. So there's that, maybe?

I loved Bruno. Liked it even more than Borat.

a movie i do not recommend: Zombieland!
So boring and full of clichés but not in a funny way but in a horrible kind of nudging, "you remember that bro" kind of way...
bad jokes that are overindulged
these horrible jokes with the writing appearing and interacting with physical objects the film
brrr

Zombieland was indeed a bit of a snoozer.  The trailer had a gun toting Woody, zombies and Van Halen.  I just expected more.

I'm about to dive into Bruno.  I've heard mostly negative things but I loved Borat too much to not see it.

I doubt this stinker is still in theaters, but Paranormal Activity is a movie I don’t recommend. If you do happen to find it at a theater, and you make the mistake of saying “one, please,” when you get to that point at the end of the movie where everybody in the theater is sitting there in silence like the dozen or so other viewers were doing the night I saw it, I do recommend that you do what I did: let out an audible, half-hearted “BOOOOOOOO.”

I'd have to say that Diary of The Dead really topped the list of vomit-inducing flicks for the year. And not because of the "gore". I have never heard such terrible dialogue.

I agree.  Bruno stunk!  That's 1 hour and 22 minutes I'll never get back.

I'm still not sure if I liked or disliked Bruno. Initially, I expected it to be similar to Borat but I was so very, very wrong. Frankly, some of the footage they included was shocking. In my opinion, the Bruno clips from the Ali G show were a bit funnier and didn't rely on shock value.

The "shocking" clips are what made the movie so genius to me. I loved the idea of the frat boys that were constantly quoting Borat going to see Bruno and being bombarded with the most overtly gay images they've probably ever been confronted with outside of a hazing. Imaging them sitting uncomfortably in their seats while Bruno explicitly mimed a sexual act with the ghost of his ex-boyfriend for what seemed like an eternity made me enjoy it just that much more.

Mike (I'm asking this here because there doesn't seem to be an all-purpose "Ask Mike" thread and am too much a pussy to start one),

Did you see "Let the Right One In"?  I'd be curious as to what you thought, because on one viewing I liked it pretty well but am not sure where I'd place it on the "Pretty Decent" to "Completely Awesome" continuum.  I can say, though, that it touched on a number of Mike-related themes:

--Slow, arty European movies about "outsiders" (see Werner Herzog)
--Childhood Cruelty (see Therese and Mike Show topics)
--Awkward Sexual Awakenings (see Thwarted Therese and Mike Show topics)
"Another thing that interests me about The Eagles is that I hate them." -- Robert Christgau

I think it's available to stream, so you don't even have to wait! Instant gratification!

Wonder if it's the version initially released on dvd with the dumbed-down subtitltes?

Also, this movie isn't really "slow" or "arty," at least not by reasonable standards.
