60s Music Rec
« on: January 10, 2010, 03:16:07 PM »
So I am a lover of The Zombies, The Kinks, The Who, The Face, Beatles, Stones, Nuggets collections and other 60's rock. I know some of you guys are well versed in this area. Any rec's of just stuff that surpasses the rest? I am looking for strong bands that I might have passed up.
Thanks in advance.

The Nightcrawlers "The Little Black Egg" is essential.

The Small Faces and The Pretty Things are two great bands that you haven't mentioned.
I'll probably go into the wee hours.

Don't ignore the early beach boys albums. They actually sound alot weirder than pet sounds to modern ears i think. My fave's 'Surfin USA' (even though 5 of the 12 songs on that album are by dick dale)

Also, the Rascals. And Sam the Sham and the Pharoes

The Millennium- Begin is pretty good. Also, early Harry Nilsson like Aerial Ballet and Pandemonium Sideshow. But, make sure it isn't the recorded Aerial Pandemonium Sideshow album.

Does the Velvet Underground count as 60s rock?

I really don't appreciate your sarcastic, anti-comedy tone, Bro!

Yeah but just because I didn't name a band doesn't mean I don't like them. I love VU. I was basically looking for superb little known bands and comps.

Both of these are right up my alley. Know any more of the like?

You mentioned the Zombies but if you haven't heard Blunstone's solo albums Enismore and One Year you should listen to those.

The Move
David Bowie's '60s output is pretty crazy
If you don't already have them, Brian Jones-era albums get overlooked - "Aftermath", "Between The Buttons", "Their Satanic Majesties Request", "Beggars Banquet" etc.
"Dad gets mad."

I haven't heard a lot of the Animals' stuff, but I've liked what I've heard.

In addition to all of the aforementioned bands, you should check out some of the compilations that Sundazed has released, because a number of them are very, very good. Try the following:

2131 S. Michigan Avenue: 60's Garage and Psychedelia from USA and Destination Records
Garage Beat '66: Volumes 1-7
Oh Yeah!: The Best of Dunwich Records
