I thought it was pretty disappointing, though maybe I'm just too burned out on that particular strain of humor when it's not pushed far enough into complete weirdness (a'la Patton Oswalt). Half of it seemed like David Cross doing a rusty version of his previous material, and the other half came across like Tucker Max's 'Religulous'.

(I reviewed it for Pitchfork, though I'm guessing people will mistake the relatively low rating for an attempt to "get back" at him for that article he wrote poking fun at Pitchfork reviews, except that (a) he wrote it more than two years before I started writing for the site and (b) it's actually funnier than anything on the CD.)

I haven't heard the album yet, but I thought he was great live when I saw him (and Todd Glass!) in Philly.

I thought early on, "Man, I'm tired of David Cross bits about things he read or signs he saw," but ended finding it pretty dang funny all in all.

I thought it was good, but I've only listened to it once.  I'd like to hear it again before expounding.

Stupornaut's Pitchfork review is a very accurate assessment of this album.  Compared to Cross's horrifyingly bad book, I Drink For A Reason, this is somewhat passable stuff, but there is nothing particularly memorable or interesting about it.  A few chuckles here and there.

I saw the live show which, as far as I can tell without having heard the album yet, contained a lot of the same material. It was generally pretty solid, but the one part I actively disliked was the 'get a load of this crazy and edgy thing I did one time so I would have a story to tell on stage!' bit about wearing a leather S&M mask on a cross-country flight. Way too self-consciously wacky.

I think this is an older bit of his, right?

I bought the DVD and CD, so I will report back about the amount of overlap between the two (unless someone else does it as well).

It was on that Comedy Death Ray compilation, along with the "My Ass Is Haunted" bit.

I Drink For A Reason soured me on DC. Man, what a slog. I gave up after 100 pages. (Actually I was reading on an iphone Kindle app, but it FELT like at least 100 pages.)

You're right, it looks like that bit is not on the new one -- but most of the material from show I saw is included (it was in October of last year).

Strike my criticism from the record!

I read a little bit of it. It seemed like it was written in a very odd style. Not, for example, a translation of his standup or even speaking mannerisms to the written page.

The bit with the signer and the blogger in his live set really reminded me of Scharpling & Wurster.

A response I got this time and every time I try to critique comedy: "Aw c'mon man lighten up and have some fun!"
