Showtime The Green Room

Anybody else see the commercials for this? Looks like it might be worth a check out.  I was a fan of Tough Crowd and it looks similar.

I saw the last 5-10 minutes of this while in a hotel a few days ago. Insider nerdery with the comedy stuff - comedians also heavily represented in the audience. It seemed pretty dang interesting b/c even though the comedians are all "On", the context is more relaxed so it's not as sound-bitey. There's more room for everything to breathe despite the fact that they all want to top each other.

The one I saw had Izzard, Drew Carey, Larry Miller (who is brilliant-one of my all time faves) and Reginald Miller. I'll definitely look for it on disk.

I've never seen any of his stand-up, but he told a joke about pie on the bonus features of The Aristocrats DVD that murdered me.

Yes, I've watched the bonus features on that DVD. Sorry.
I'll probably go into the wee hours.

The cross Europe bus?

He also tells that great joke that was supposedly a favorite of Carson's ... the one that has a bunch of elaborate description and set up about a steamy jungle etc etc, and then you see two hippos. One says to the other, "god, I've been thinking this was Tuesday all day." Or whatever. I may have farted up that punch line, but you get the idea.

No shame in watching those extras; I also watched the commentary track. A commentary track of people talking over top of a movie that is nothing but talking.

I've never seen any of his stand up either but i knew his reputation, and he was pretty great on this show. I like it when comedians can just let loose and just riff off each other which seems to be what this show is trying to accomplish.

This show is really hit or miss depending on the guests. Anybody see the latest episode. It was really great it had Tommy Smothers, Penn Jillette, and Martin Mull?

It's pretty fitting that all of those names are written on a bathroom wall.

Yeah, it really does depend on the guests. The one with Dana Gould, Andy Kindler, and Andy Dick was stupendous, but the one with Paul Mooney, Bobby Slayton and Rain Pryor was not so good - the fourth guest, whose name I can't remember, was the only funny part.
I'll probably go into the wee hours.

Yeah the Paul Mooney one was kind of a drag.  He kept trying to make the whole thing serious and brought the vibe down.

Dana Gould was awesome, though.  He's one of those guys who can make you laugh just by existing.  Just a gifted, funny dude.

I am a massive, massive XXXXL fan of Dana Gould. I think he's just a genius.

Conversely, with Paul Mooney, I can't tell if he's telling jokes or he's just mad at every white person there ever was.

I don't think he's hateful at all, but damn if it isn't alienating when listening to his stuff.

EDIT: I changed my mind. I saw the episode and he's a racist tool.

Yeah, it seemed like the other guys were trying to have fun and be jokey and Mooney kept interjecting pissed off sounding stuff that no one laughed at.  It was just weird.

The one with Robert Klein and Jonathan Winters was a lot of fun, though.

Also Tommy Smothers giving Penn Gillette shit was funny.

Pretty much the whole show is great for the most part actually.  I hope they bring it back for a second season.

I'm sorry I don't have Showtime and will have to wait for DVD to see it. That show is made for a comedy dork like me.

OMG this just sunk in ... has anyone seen Serial w/Martin Mull and Tommy Smothers and about a billion other awesome people? It was unavailable for years but I think has made it to DVD ... I had a shitty old cassette from Cinemax that an ex bf taped over. Oh, jesus I loved that movie.
