Oh, yeah! I forgot about his movies - they're terrible.

He's also funny in Louie. He's a funny guy, but you can't really ask the question "What CAN'T he do?", know what I mean?

Look, I am a getting little more than tired of agreeing with you all the time AC but Gervais as Louie's doctor is painfully good. The whole show was wonderful.

I know! When I thought of him in Louie, then I wanted to watch all the episodes straight through again.

On the topic of Louis C.K., I spent years avoiding him because I heard him mentioned on Opie & Anthony and they're just terrible (I don't know why I was listening to them in the first place). But he really is just top notch and, I think, has one of the best voices for comedy.

The best thing about Ricky Gervais is Stephen Merchant.

Repeating this for emphasis.

I like Gervais - I think both of his shows were funny. That stand up thing on HBO was not bad, I liked it okay, but I wasn't crazy about it. I put that down to the weird little differences between American and British stand up, though.

I bet Tom's problem with Gervais is that the guy just keeps relying on a comedic formula that's ten years old now and isn't seamless anymore.  Also, Gervais is sorta like the Kevin Spacey of Comedy:  the more he plays himself, the less interesting he becomes.

That said, THE OFFICE (UK) is a landmark.  Now Gervais just needs to stop building off of if and break new ground.

His role as Gervais' agent in Extras is the best. So perfectly played. I am not ashamed to say how much I enjoyed that show. The guest stars were brilliant. David Bowies' impromptu "Fat Man" song? Loved it.

I would actually contest that and replace Merchant with Karl Pilkington. I think his special about intelligence was one of the greatest things on british television and An Idiot Abroad was hilarious too.

I loved Stephen Merchant in Garth Marenghi's Darkplace. Also in Extras, playing Gervais agent. Why isn't he more famous/have his own tv show.

I'm unclear on his feelings on John C. Reilly. I tried to follow along with the show but kept losing count. Was it a "ehhh"?

Gervais earns a shrug from me. I know it's destroying him.

I've had a hard time deciding whether I dislike Gervais over how irritating he is as a person, or if he over extends himself with stand-up. He's like someone who's been promoted past his ability. The Office and Extra's are so great and eternally re-watchable, but when ever I watch some extra on the dvds, all I can think about is how much I would hate to work with him. (That poor editor.) His podcast was funny enough, but when he started charging for it, I didn't think it was so great that I was even going to continue with it in the first place.

I don't see what the big deal is with his stand-up, followed up by op-eds where he writes as the world's foremost atheist. He's starting to occupy a smug Bill Mahar place in my head where he likes to preach to the converted.

What is this special about intelligence? I'd like to see it.
