My Favorite (Best Show) Things
« on: March 03, 2011, 09:10:31 AM »
I was really bored at work yesterday.  And maybe I shouldn't have watched Sound of Music last weekend.

My Favorite (Best Show) Things

Voice modulators and lady foot lockers
Rollins’ song “Do It” and Ted Leo rockers
Fast running mice wearing capes tied on with strings
These are a few of my favorite things

Protégé races and New Bridge disasters
4Locos and Mike shows and phonecalls from pastors
The weird hunks of fudge Tom always brings
These are a few of my favorite things

Bryces in Lean-tos and Gorches on scooters
Zieglers from Philly praising nem Hooters
Feuds with ex-Monkees over tennis match slightings
These are a few of my favorite things

When I'm heave ho’d
When I get James’d
When GG’s death leaves me sad
I simply remember my favorite things
And then I don't feel so bad

Beautiful, really. I would drop the "on" in line 3, so you get this effect

Fast run ning mice wear ing capes tied with strings
1      2     3     1      2       3    1        2      3      1

but that's a quibble. Fantastic wordcraft there, Elvis Costello worthy, and without the over-strained adenoidal whiny vocal.

I did the same thing as I sang it.

It is all so good--but this---
"Bryces in Lean-tos and Gorches on scooters
Zieglers from Philly praising nem Hooters"

Perfection.

Thanks for the kind words.  Maybe next time I'm stood up by a client, I'll work on "How Do You Solve a Problem Like Geneva", a song from Greggulator's POV.

Bravo, but a few quibbles:

* "The weird hunks of fudge Tom always brings" needs two more syllables, unless one signs "Tom" with three, which is awkward.  "Tom and Mike always bring"?  Awkward.

* "Zieglers from Philly praising nem Hooters" needs one more syllable (although pausing after "Philly" works).

* "Feuds with ex-Monkees over tennis match slightings" has two syllables too many.  "Over" can be rushed to eliminate one (more or less) but "slightings" is one syllable too long.  I suppose "slings" would be too precious?

* The meter of "When GG’s death leaves me sad" is a little off, but by saying "GG" unnaturally is can be made to work.

Sorry for the nitpicking, but I know you must seek perfection.  And, seriously, kudos.

The tennis line was the most sticky, I couldn't phrase it in a way that wasn't awkward and I really wanted to include the Dolentz incident.

The fudge line was originally, The weird hunks of fudge the host always brings, maybe that works better, but it semed off to call Tom "the host".

Sarah is too sheltered up there in Kennenbunkport at the guest house on the Bush family compound.  The Philly pronunciation of "Ziegler" has three fuzzy syllables.
ZEEGG-UUHH-LURR.  It's not a sharp two syllable word.

I spent a weekend in Philly about 2 months ago and talked to about 4 people so I obviously am right.

"The weird hunks of fudge that the host always brings"--that works nicely.
