I'm not really a fan of WTF, but I have listened to it a few times and enjoyed it (based on the guest mostly.) I understand why it is so popular but for me I can't listen to it very often because I find Marc Maron's whole persona kinda hard going.
Let me clarify. I think he seems like a good guy overall and a funny man but the whole on-the-cusp of a breakdown thing and the constant referencing of therapy and psychiatric medicines and the intense dissection of his whole character is not for me. I'm usually a fairly relaxed, contented person and when I'm not digging deep into my own psyche does nothing for me, hence why hearing someone else do it to themselves is maybe not so fulfilling.
That said I do not think bad of him or his show, more that it is just not for me. Please don't think of this as criticism of Marc Maron....
.. Because I really enjoyed the Marc and Tom show. It was witty and entertaining and fun (despite the psyche-searching.) Clearly the guys had a blast doing it and that came through. The bit about Tom Waites killed in particular.
My point, I think, is that if you take someone you are luke-warm too (in this case Maron) and add in someone you are white-hot to (in this case Tom) it doesn't come out somewhere in the middle, it comes out great. I hope non-Best Show loving WTF fans get the opposite effect!
