FMU in general
« on: March 08, 2012, 04:37:06 PM »
i got to say, that as someone that has been listening for 10+ years, they are doing a fantastic job with the programing this last year or so.  although two of my all time faves, small change and mike lupica, are on long term leave, i have to say that they have some of the best dj's/shows currently on the air. what do you all think?

here are my highlights:
i have been loving Duane's show, he has been playing amazing music, distractingly good!
Trouble is always amazing and now is no exception.
Terry T and Diane Kamikaze both have been killing it this winter
and sundays: Gaylord into Monica into Martha into Therese is 10 hours of amazing!
you're gonna love hell, its a lot like Ohio.

I totally agree! I feel so lucky to be alive right now, during the GOLDEN ERA OF WFMU.

Fabio into Clay is a wonderful pairing.

Jones into Bill Kelly into Gaylord into the Hoof 'n' Mouth was the first time I've had WFMU on for twelve hours straight in years.  Pancakes to bedtime.  What a great day.  I've been in NJ a ton the past couple of years, and just having FMU on in the car has randomly exposed me to do many new fantastic shows that it takes the sting out of some of my old favorites stepping off the schedule (I'm looking at you, Douglas Wolk and Yancy Yohannon).

It's like the '86 Mets these days -- they can get you from anywhere in the lineup.

This seems like a good place to ask about suggestions for other WFMU premiums I should select.  I've picked three or four so far for sure (Best Show obviously, Cherry Blossom Clinic, I forget what else) but any suggestions would be appreciated for the 7 I'll get in total.  In the past I've really enjoyed the Radio Thrift Shop cd premiums.

It depends on your musical tastes, obviously, but DJ Rupture and Monica usually have great premiums. Monica's premium from last year is maybe the best mix I've ever heard.
I'll probably go into the wee hours.

I'm really enjoying WFMU's dance music programming: Lamin Fofana, DJ /Rupture and the Scones podcast are really great. Lamin and Scones really bring it.

depends on what your into, ive gotten a wide rage of stuff in the past, including sinners crossroads, dj/rupture, terry t, mr fine wine, choking on cufflinks, scott, trouble, billy jam, noah and small change and have been pleased with all of them.  the stand outs over the years include Ruptures cumbia mix, choking on cufflinks 08&09 (maybe 07&08) mixes, terry t's idiot box and also Frank's Afro Beat cd from 09(?).

anyway this year ive got my eyes on tom and terrys (of course), trouble, duane, martha, rupture, and liz.  martys and stans both sound great also...

hope this helps.

2-disc set called "This Time The Dream's On Me." I can't remember the exact description, but it was something like "2 discs full of impossibly romantic songs."

Monica!! Her 2-Disc the year before that -- Bridge of Sighs has been a household favorite for years--standout song -- the Real Tuesday Weld's "The Show Must Go On."

I always like Joe Blelock's premium. I got a premium by mistake once-- Sinner's Crossroad. Gospel.  Maybe because it is not something I'd consciously pick out, but I'll go back for seconds on that.

This year I think one of your or anyone's choice choices has to be Michael Shelley's Super Hits from the 70's (playlist below).  During one of his marathon shows (3/3/12), he played the Pernice's cover of Joe Jackson's "Different for Girls."  I loved it.

Super Hits from the 70's
1) Bambi Kino "You're 16"
2) Bell Sound featuring Dennis Diken "Love Grows (Where My Rosemary Goes)"
3) The Bo-Keys "Stuck In The Middle"
4) Bucky "Band Of Gold"
5) Chandler Travis Philharmonic "Right Back Where We Started From"
6) The Dahlmanns "Ring Ring"
7) Eugene Edwards "I Hear You Knocking"
8) The Explorers Club "Don't Pull Your Love"
9) Frank Bango "You Wear It Well"
10) Frank Lee Sprague "Can't Get Enough"
11) Jay Sherman-Godfrey "Couldn't Get It Right"
12) Joe Pernice "It's Different For Girls"
13) Mike Doughty "Take Me Home, Country Roads"
14) Mike Viola "Lonely Boy"
15) The Minus 5 (Scott McCaughey & Peter Buck) "Arms of Mary"
16) Paul Collins Beat "Here Comes That Rainy Day Feeling"
17) Ray Mason Band "Come And Get Your Love"
18) Shibboleth "The Rockford Files"
19) Splitsville "How Deep Is Your Love"
20) Stevie Jackson (of Belle & Sebastian) "Rock Your Baby"
21) Wreckless Eric & Amy Rigby "Guitar Man"
22) Yo La Tengo "I Saw The Light"

Man, I am so far in debt I will be lucky to scrape together enough pennies to pay my pledge to the Best Show.
