Best of the Best (Best show edition)
« on: July 01, 2013, 07:14:56 PM »
To run with Tom's topic of Best of the Best, I just wanted to talk about some of my favorite things from the Best Show. The things that make me audibly excited when they happen:

1. any mentions of "the magazine"
2. Darren and Philly Boy Roy calls
3. Frankie Teardrop references
4. Pig Pen raps
5. a couple of calls ago when Jon's character was riffing on how, if reference to Tom "a perceived slight in your mind is like a pen in Shakespeare's hand" (i apologize if that's mis-quoted)
6. Bad Company-ing bad callers
7. Any time Jason from Alabama calls
8. Tom talking with Jon Hodgman or Julie Klausner
9. Gary busting Mike's beans

We under-discussed The Magazine around here. That was a year-long setup with a perfect punchline in the last minute of the last show of the year. It's the tops of what you can do with slow-burn comedy.
I really don't appreciate your sarcastic, anti-comedy tone, Bro!

I don't remember this at all. What happened and when?
(I mean, I of course remember the magazine--but no punchline.)

I like a lot when Tom just gets into things, be it music or some observation, and really lays it out.

Also, whenever something unexpected and special is happening between a caller and Tom.

End of 2009? Callers - especially the Carl family, but most everyone - kept referring to a particularly filthy magazine throughout the year and told Tom he would eventually call the guy who ran it. I won't spoil the end.

I like to imagine it's the 2012 Best Show Premium.

I love how the callers would just insist that they were NOT going to get the magazine, but it would haunt them until they bought it. Over the months they were doing it, it played out like a lost Twilight Zone episode that was, rightly, locked away (along with the last episode of Archie Bunker's Place). The fact that it didn't have a name or the name was too filthy to say out loud, instead just known as "the magazine", is a cherry on top of perfect joke.

As a side note, does anyone else ever listen to the show and wonder what jokes are from Tom and what are from Jon on the calls? I always assume any jokes about sexual deviancy are from Jon. Is that fair?  ???

They've talked about in interviews that a lot of stuff is just trying to make the other one lose it on air. I think almost every mention of coke from 2000 to, what, 2006? was done with this in mind.

Ronald Thomas Clontle's dog is named "Kenneth," which is the second-funniest part of that call for me. The first is when he gets distracted by the basketball game at 5:43 into the call: "... he just blocks him, what is he doing?!"

"Hi, this is John Doe from Genericville."

"John Doe from Genericville – what's going on in Genericville tonight?"

"Oh, not a whole lot."

Never fails to put a smile on my face.

When Vance takes over for a bit. Reads from a feature in Mojo, discusses a boxed set, that sort of thing. There should always be more Vance.
