Overrated Albums

Can someone please explain to me why so many people think Jim Morrison was a talented poet?

The Doors suck like space. Wow. He has GOT to be the most over rated figure in rock history.

I think people have  a respect for Morrison for a bunch of reason.  The Doors were super influential on folks like Iggy Pop, David Yow, Joey Ramone and the like.  Morrison, despite being a douche, was a drunk asshole that you either had to love or hate.  I think now it is more acceptable for that but when they first started they were causing riots and tons of controversy.  Its all about perspective.  A friend of mine tried to argue that there are people who hate the doors and love Shellac and then there are those who think just the opposite.  I am not going to defend the Doors but they have their merit.  Will I listen to them a bunch?  They didn't last the test of time in a lot of ways as did Iggy with Funhouse and whatnot but Iggy did do some not so great solo stuff. 

I thought about everything on the list was about fair as far as saying these records are a bit overhyped minus Marquee Moon. I think it is a great album and the title track may be long but its one of my favorites on that album by far.

I will always have a soft spot for the Doors.  I liked 'em when I was a kid, when Jim Morrison's voice raised a quiver in my prepubescent loins, and I've never gotten over that early thrill.  Besides, Lotte Lenya said she liked the Doors' version of "The Alabama Song" the best of all the covers out there, and that counts for something.

I don't get the complete hatred of The Doors by critics and rock geeks. The albums aren't good, but most 60's bands didn't put out good albums. The double disc greatest hits is just a good collection of 60's singles. Yeah, the band and Jim Morrison are overrated and shouldn't be treated as rock gods, but the songs hold up, at least the ones that make the hits albums. There aren't many bands from that era or any era for that matter that can put together 15-20 songs that stand the test of time. I'm not even a Doors fan, but I know they didn't suck. They just never put out a great album.

Spend a summer working at a camp kitchen and all your boss plays are Doors tapes. Trust me you will see why there is so much hate for that garbage. I'm not just talking about the regular albums. I'm also including that spoken word crap too.

Yeah, but anything you have to listen to over and over is going to suck. I think that's why I don't have a hatred for most classic rock other than Led Zeppelin, Jimi Hendrix, Metallica (if you can call Metallica classic rock), and The Wall. My parents didn't listen to it and I never had a job where I had to listen to it non-stop. Now, in high school all I heard at sports practices and friends cars were those bands I mentioned and I can't really listen to that anymore. I was never really subjected to an onslaught of Doors so maybe that's why I still have some appreciation for at least the greatest hits discs. But, being forced to listen to the albums and the spoken word crap would be unbearable. Ouch. I do have one friend that claims the Doors don't have a bad song in their catalog, but luckily he's respectful enough to listen to it on his own time!

I've never bought into Led Zeppelin as awesome. It sounds like the Grateful Dead turned up a few notches and a 15 year old boy writing the lyrics.
