Saw a screening last night. It was good. I give it a thumbs up, despite HUGE flaws.
If you want this thread to be spoiler-free, let me know.
BTW, I'm a major Hellboy/bprd/mignola fan comic-wise. So know that my complaints will be fanboyish.

I heard that that big blue demon was a guy in a suit and not cg.
-
I don't read comics, but I remember hearing from people I trust that Hellboy 1 was really good and not at all like other superhero movies. Then I saw it and thought it was awful.
Does Hellboy have some huge fanboy fanbase that I'm getting tricked by, or are these movies actually brilliant and I just have no taste?
-
Actually, the first one wasn't so bad. I really love the Hellboy and B.P.R.D. comics. One of the recent additions to the B.P.R.D. cast is a 2000 year old mummified woman who is quarantined due to high risk of infection or some shit because she was on island for centuries and blah blah blah -- well, she had one request. She wanted a kitten to keep her company. Awwwwww!!!! KITTENS! Kittens fix everything in B.P.R.D., including Liz's fucked up brain.
B.P.R.D. is so full of kitten love.

I say give it a weekend and let those who are emotionally invested see it. Then feel free to dish how ever you want.
Coming from someone who has ruined and been ruined for movies, this will be more fun with more participation.
I'm pretty excited to see it myself. Hellboy was one of the few comics that really engaged me.
-
im looking forward to seeing the same characters del toro used in pan's labyrinth, now in hellboy 2.
*oddly, i dont know if im being sarcastic about that or not.

I do REALLY want to see Hellboy 2, however, just to see some crazy-ass Giullermo Del Toro monsters.
-
I agree. Mike Mignola's designs are in good hands with Del Toro. The two are a perfect match.
I'm anticipating some holes, like there were in the 1st Hellboy movie, but you know what? I wouldn't have done better, so I'm going to munch my popcorn and try not to get crumbs on my lap.

or your moustache.

That's just cruel, Baron.

I thought the same thing when I saw the trailer, especially the one that looked a lot like the faun in Pan's.

Fortunately, I received the Official Hellboy Mustache Comb in the promotional press kit. It was a PR long shot, but it was a hit with this kid.
No one in the movie has a mustache... that's what puzzles me.
-
its only fortunate if you remember to bring it.
represent.
-
It is compatible with the Hellboy keychain. There will be no problems.

Or rats.
And speaking of which, I was at the movies last night and a couple rats decided to get into a wrestling match at the end my aisle. It was disconcerting, and I missed parts of the ending.

Ha ha!
When rats watch violent films like Hellboy, it's puts terrible ideas in their heads. They're like little clay pots that need moulding so they don't act out what they see on screen.

oh yeah, i forgot about the rats.

Caught a free screening of this Monday night at the Lincoln Center Lowes -- it was sort of like watching Pan's Labyrinth creatures fly around and destroy things for no reason.
Decent fun. I wouldn't have paid money to see it though.
The "golden army" was kind of a golden letdown. They might have been powerful when Elves walked the earth, but they didn't seem like a world conquering robot army to me.

Is anybody else bothered by Perlman/Del Toro's interpretation of Hellboy? I loved Hellboy in the comics, but in the movies he just seems like a big baby.
Plus not as awesome looking.
-
I want to see it. I'm not really much of a comic book reader, but I liked the first movie a whole lot.

I concur. And I loved Pan's, so that sweetens the deal.
-
I really enjoyed it.
Until I saw that Seth MacFarlane did the voice of Krauss.
Alright, it was still awesome.
-
I liked it overall, despite minor qualms.
And I kind of liked Seth MacFarlane as Krauss, SO THERE. TAKE THAT.
-
I loved the scene where Hellboy and Abe get tanked.
"This is the last one!!!" - Abe

Supposedly Hyde-Pearce was so impressed by the job of physical acting achieved by the actor inside water-boy's suit that he refused to be credited, insisting that the other guy (who I think is a Jones, but who knows which one. Dean?) receive the SAG points.

Is that true? David Hyde-Pearce is such a cool guy.
NILES GOTTA HAVE IT!!!!!!

If IMDB can be trusted, there's this
http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0427964/bio (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0427964/bio)
"Although his voice as 'Abe Sapien' in Hellboy (2004) was dubbed by David Hyde Pierce, David refused a credit because he felt that Abe was entirely Doug's creation and did not wish to detract from his performance."
So I say YES

I too thought the same thing. I was impressed by the style in Pan's Labyrinth but can't he change his fantasy characters at least a little from one movie to the next?
-
If they do another Hellboy movie the need to include the Babba Yagga, Roger the Homunculus, and Lobster Johnson.
-
Johann Krauss was the shit. That character had me in stitches everytime he was on screen. I am still kind of tying to figure out why. There were some wonky story elements but overall, I really enjoyed Hellboy 2.

I don't know. Nobody minds that all Jim Henson creations all have that muppet look, even the Labyrinth and Dark Crystal stuff. Same with H.R. Giger. Maybe Del Toro (or whoever his F/X guy is) has an aesthetic that they stick to.
-
I saw it this afternoon and liked it. I was a little put off by the overly-campy dialogue, but whatareyagonnado, it was a fun movie. It wasn't seamless by any means, but I didn't walk into this expecting to buy the Critereon release in a few months.
***SPOILER***
MacFarlane could have used a little raining in, but when his response to losing his armor was slowly streaking the compound singing German folk songs, I busted up. CHARACTER HUMOR!

I agree with all of this. Seth MacFarlane's character had a couple of lines that almost crossed into overt parody of a typical dramatic movie moment.

On the other hand, "I'm not a baby, I'm a tumor" deserves consideration for the quote list.

It's rarely one guy. It's usually an entire post-production group. Good call on comparing this aesthetic to Jim Henson's workshop. It's been awhile since one guy has managed to create a signature fantasy world to the stories he puts on the screen. It's as much fun to imagine all of the Children's Television Workshop universes overlapping as much as it is Del Toro's fidgeting together in one calamitous world.

I geeked over "See You Next Wednesday".
