Did anyone catch the final handful of sketches ("Fall Leaves", "Underground" and "Fart Face")? There wasn't one laugh from the audience in either of the three. Was it all just filler?
-
I thought Fart Face was really well written, it reminded me of a KiTH style sketch. I'm pretty sure people laughed just at the word fart too.
The other 2 were pretty weak though, I agree.
-
Fartface was one of those where I was waiting for the next notch on it and it never really got there.
-

Forte definitely looked like Dave Foley as the AT & Love boss.
-
I'm pretty sure people laughed
People at home, maybe. The studio audience was (understandably) icily quiet.
-
I was stone-faced for pretty much the whole hour and a half, but I agree that the last three bits were particularly unfunny.
-
The whole thing was just so awkward, all the way around. I like Josh Brolin, I think he might have a slim chance of filling a Heath Ledger kind of niche, but when he tries to be funny he looks like it could switch directly into anger at the drop of a hatch. The fartface sketch was well written, and Brolin actually pulled it off, but stuck in on the tail end of all that other uncomfortableness, the reception was expectedly horrid. Last night, even MacGruber was off, when I usually love most everything Will Forte does!
In part I blame the inflated credibility lent to it by 30 Rock and Weekend Update Thursday when it's not entirely deserved, and also blame those shows for just generally diluting the SNL stock (whatever is left of that). I still watch it if I can, because by all rights it should be amazing and sometimes still can be, but who isn't disappointed by SNL more often than not? I mean come on.

Ben Affleck as Keith Olbermann was freaking hilarious.

Yuck, really? He was mumbling and that impression was so bad I couldn't understand what the fuck he was saying.

I don't think he did a very good job with the voice, but the writing was dead-on.
-
I'm not a high-falutin critic of impressions personally, and not that big of a Ben Affleck fan either, but yeah ~ I laughed at least 10 times. :D
-
I liked the giraffe thing.
-
Two hour special tonight, 9pm Eastern.
-
I thought the Olberman sketch was really good but went on way too long. The rest of the show stunk.

It did go on really long.
What was with Affleck's, um, "hip hop" character?

I was appalled that John McCain and Sarah Palin both appeared on the election special last night.
P.S. Ms. Palin was terrifying.
-
clips are up at Hulu
and all of them, on the site at least, are very much not funny.

This has been bothering me for a while. I don't understand how SNL can even humor the idea of letting those two trolls appear "fun" or even human on that show. I actually believe that there are people who will end up voting for McCain just because he seems to have a sense of humor about himself.
For shame SNL!

Lorne Micahels is supposedly on the dark side.
It won't matter in the long run
anybody dumb enuff to be swayed by stuff like that wasn't gonna make the right vote anyway

good, insightful point. the other side are a bunch of subhumans.

Yeah, they sure are. Their regressive economic policies ALONE are immoral and unethical. But the disgusting campaign the republicans have run this year appealing to the most base, ugly elements of their party painting the opposition candidate as "other" "dangerous" "terrorist sympathizer" seals the deal. Especially to anyone that understands the context of such comments and our country's history.
Torture, pre emptive war, illegal wire tapping, demonizing homosexuals...on and on.
FUCK a bunch of republicans.

Jesus Christ on a pogo stick ... they were both on the primetime special the night before the election? Didn't there used to be an unspoken decorum about these things? As in: it's okay to have some fun, but in the final hours before the vote it's time to cut out the nonsense. I loved the HillaryPoehler/TinaFaylin sketch and the VP debate sketch ... But this monday-night-surprise move is perhaps the most whorish thing SNL has ever done.

NBC is doing whatever they can to milk the SNL election mania success right now. In two weeks, SNL will be back at average ratings and people will forget about it again.
I didn't see the special last night but I assumed it was just a repeat of all the clips from the past season about the election. Was there actually new material? It seems way too difficult to do a 90minute show for Saturday and then an entirely new 2 hour show two days later.
-

I only watched the McCain and Palin appearances on Hulu. They were (probably) prerecorded but "new" to the viewing public. I believe the special was mostly old stuff, not just from this year but from past political seasons. But McCain and Palin doing new appearances the night before ... that's the thing that rubbed me the wrong way.
Palin's monologue was utterly moronic. It sounded like she wrote it herself. It was that bad.
-
Some stuff was clearly recorded, like the intro from Poehler-as-Clinton. I don't think that McCain and Palin were actually there last night, it didn't have the look of a LIVE show.
-
Palin's monologue was utterly moronic. It sounded like she wrote it herself. It was that bad.
Yeah. It must have been her campaign advisers and speechwriters that came up with that little song and dance. Only they could have devised something so bad. And the audience was dead silent. I was cringing from embarrassment throughout, not in the Steve Carell/Larry David sort of way, but in a genuine "I feel so bad for you" sort of way.
....on second thought, maybe because of the Monday night shift-differential, NBC flew out some of Leno's writers to fill in. Just a theory.
-
Just to clarify: I didn't post because I was worried the McCain and Palin appearances on the special last night would sway people. I just thought they were undignified, inappropriate, and pathetic. And that Palin--or someone--thought it was funny to threaten revocation of NBC's license if SNL continued to parody her after McCain's of-course-certain victory really gave me the creeps.
-

Yeah. Being the paranoid person that I am, I couldn't help but imagine this as some re-envisioned War of the Worlds broadcast. Even the setting was eery, with the dark background and no indication it was an SNL skit, not even laughter--only a tiny NBC logo at the bottom left.
creepy...
-

Agreed completely. It won't sway any voters. It just plain sucked. Palin's attempts at humor are unbearable.

I did have an argument with a friend of mine, though, who was like "well at least she has a sense of humour about herself! She seems nice enough!" The fact that they could have made anyone think that for even a second makes me so mad at SNL.
-
Giraffes! Giraffes!
-
I haven't seen the SNL special, but whenever they get politicians on it blows. This is why the Daily Show pwns SNL: when they have politicians on, they actually do a semi-real interview and don't involve them in these dumb skits that are like "I'm laughing at my Self!" That's the kind of humor you save for office Christmas parties and other no-comedy-standards events. I can't help thinking it suggests this weird parental relationship between politicians and the rest of us, like "Oh hey guys, I'm not above coming down in the basement and making a couple jokes with you for a few minutes. All right, that's enough, time to go upstairs and run the world! You guys have fun down here."
Fuck that.
-
I think mocking our leaders is, in reality, one of our most important American traditions. It's a bald faced expression of freedom. Letting the target "in on the joke" to lessen the blow undermines that to some degree, I think.
If you want power, we're going to make fun of you. And you have to grin and bear it, because that's part of how America keeps its leaders honest.
It's all fun and games, except that it kind of isn't.
-

Yeah, that's a more succinct version of what I was trying to say. I just feel like, "No, you don't get to join in on this fun. Jerk!"
-

Listening to Alec Baldwin, Tina Fey, and Seth Meyers talk about Palin on the show, they all went out of their way to emphasize how nice she was. Honestly, she really didn't have any other choice but to "have a sense of humor" about herself. If she were to take it too seriously, everyone would give her crap but if she at least pretends to go along with it, all her supporters can brag about how well she took it. As far as McCain goes, he's always been pretty "friendly" any time I've seen him on a talk show so it's certainly not anything new for him.
I'm going to agree with TE on this one, anyone who has their opinion swayed by SNL probably shouldn't bother voting at all (although I'm not going to go the "subhuman" route).
-
Chevy Chase: "You think they're just doing this because Sarah is funny?!?!" (http://www.cnn.com/video/#/video/showbiz/2008/11/03/intv.chevy.chase.cnn) Beautiful.
PS: Chase should have totally been doing Dick Cheney impersonation.
-
The only time I laughed out loud during the entire hour and a half was at the line "He left his job as a foreigner to come to this country."
-
I thoroughly enjoyed the "Clearing the Air" short film. Anyone notice it was labeled "A Movie by Fred, Bill, & Noah?" That Noah being Noah Baumbach, apparently. http://everypersoninnewyork.blogspot.com/2008/11/noah-baumbach-standing-fred-armisen.html (http://everypersoninnewyork.blogspot.com/2008/11/noah-baumbach-standing-fred-armisen.html)

I wish I didn't think last night's sketch with Luda, T-Pain and Samberg-as-Blizzard Man was funny. But I did.
-
Samberg's dancing and slant-rhyming while Ludacris egged him on was definitely an upgrade to the tired old "corny white guy rapping" joke.
-
The original Blizzard Man is also very funny. "Ludacris... Blizzard Man... 1995."
-
turns out he's made a couple of prior appearances:
http://serenitysolitude.multiply.com/video/item/36
http://nerdnirvana.org/2007/10/28/snl-andy-samberg-as-the-blizzard-man/
-
I liked that sketch as well, but I think the various incarnations of Tim McGraw's hair were the funniest part of last night's show.
-
I would love to see Andy Samberg in Tom's studio.
-
Blizzard Man has always been good. I'm surprised/thankful that they haven't beat the skit to death.
Last's night's episode was terrible otherwise. I asked my wife why Tim McGraw is a sex symbol and she said he should keep his hat on.
-
WifeyWu and moi enjoyed the “James Bond” and “Prank Call” parodies.
-
I would love to see Andy Samberg in Tom's studio.
I'd rather T-Pain and Ludacris were on.
-
I would love to see Andy SambergBill Hader in Tom's studio.
-
I would love to see Andy SambergBill Hader in Tom's studio.
Second. Especially if he took calls as that creepy Dateline dude.
-
I wasn't a huge fan of Fred Armisen's Obama, but last night I thought he really captured him. It was amazing how well he has picked up on his speaking patterns now.
-
Agreed - that whole sketch felt like it was a chance for him to show off how well he's polished that impersonation too. Looks like Fred has a job for the next 4 years if he wants it.
As for last nights show, the only stuff I really liked was WU and the calculator sketch, the monologue was pretty alright too. That hot office girl thing with Wiig fell on its face hard, and the Vinny Vedecci one didn't feel like any of the previous versions of it. I've been unable to comment on SNL at the comedy zone board lately because I know Casey Wilson reads it, or at the very least is aware of it, and I don't wanna hurt her feelings or be that internet schmuck celebs talk about, because she seems awesome and capable of being funny elsewhere - but man, she is just awful on SNL. Awful. I haven't liked her in anything so far, and it seems the longer she is on, the worse she gets. She's just a prop with boobs.
Also, what is with all these rappers turning into Mila Kunis' character from That 70's Show? TI's song is just about his gucci rag in a club?? Yikes, maybe Trembling Eagle is right...
-
i enjoyed the first digital short but the second one was a little too silly.
also, seeing john malkovich say "featuring swizz beatz" made my year complete.

I posted this in every subforum on every SNL forum in existence. Now you can feel safe saying whatever you want.

As long as you added "No disrespect intended, but..." at the top.

I liked both shorts. I know the second one aired at 12:40, but it's still weird that they can't say "Dick in a Box" on network TV, but you can say "Jizz in my pants." What a country!
-
Rarely have I felt so badly for laughing so hard at something as I did during Fred Armisen's impression of Governor Paterson.
-
Rarely have I felt so badly for laughing so hard at something as I did during Fred Armisen's impression of Governor Paterson.
Indeed. I was a little pissed but when he kept walking in front of the camera, and especially when he ordered 50 circus tickets, I couldn't stop from guffaw outbreak.
-
I liked the woman in the audience who groaned at Will Forte's racist wedding toast. The toast along with Fred Armisen's Gov. Patterson were the highlights.
-
it wasn't all that funny, but the bronx beat sketch at the start was like my life.
"say vitamin" etc.
-
I would never do that to you, Samir.
I always try to make British people try to do an American accent. Which is much better.
Right?
-
The guy in the wedding toast sketch whose relation to passing time was cars he had owned cracked me up. It was like Hugh Laurie studied my dad in preparation for that bit.
-
The last SNL of 2008 was the funniest in a looooooong while. I was in tears by the time Armisen ordered fifty circus tickets.
-
I heard the last SNL went too far! :o
-
In what direction?
-
Making fun of blind people. 8)
-
Yeah but I don't think they saw it.
(Ahhhhhh, why go there, inner voice ask me!)
It's sad, really. 25-30 years ago, Ray charles and stevie wonder participated in SNL's ribs on their blindness with little hesitation.

Rosario Dawson/Fleet Foxes. Not a laugh to be had.

I agree completely... except for the beards.
-
terrible episode
the classroom sketch, where wiig's character gilly kept doing increasingly violent things, was so unfunny, it actually briefly made me think (LESS) of our own Gilly. only fleetingly!
Modified to make sense.
-
It was terrible. But I did enjoy dreaming of what Wurster would do with the goose character.
-
Yeah, pretty rotten. The Cheney open was especially awful, as was the Aladdin sketch too. Lets get Leno to fill that slot too this year, because SNL just can't seem to get it done anymore.
-
Lets get Leno to fill that slot too this year
Oh snap! haha
-
That was my very first exposure to Fleet Foxes. I've never seen a group of self-important young men who were so in love with their own voices. Is Kansas enjoying a comeback right now? Do they know the Time Is Right?

Me too! I haven't heard word one from these cats. The sound like America. Or Poco.
Or some combination thereof.
Abyssmal.

-
But their facial hair is so foxy!!
Spoony, you have no need for your mustache combs and wax anymore, no? Can you lend some to these guys?
-
My mustache was classy!
That's not a bad idea though. I could make it a mission of mine to hunt down and groom the members of Fleet Foxes. I'm going to perfect my skills by heading down to Bedford Ave with a bucket of soapy water and scissors to un-lumberjack the youth. I'M COMING FOR YOU FLEET FOXES.
-
Ah man, now I have to change my name. It's pretty weird that in the past two years it's been used on 30 Rock and SNL.
I thought Fleet Foxes redeemed the show and that the Gitmo ad was pretty funny.
-
You and I may not agree on our southern rock chicken-fried bands,* Gilly, but we see eye to eye on comedy. The Gitmo ad WAS funny. Although it didn't split my sides, I thought the Police Show Written by a 4th Grade Spanish Class was a great idea and they pulled it off, you racists.
And everyone's biting your name because it's a great name. Hold your head up high.
*I just HAD to take one more swing at that band. What's my problem?
-
who's the dumbest member of CSNY?
The fleet foxes.
But seriously, folks, I really dug those mormon tabernacle choir harmonies.
-
Hugman wins. I'm throwing out my computer now.
-
It's rare that the musical guest can match the comedic intensity of the rest of show. Congratulations, Fleet Foxes!
-
I like Fleet Foxes. Grow a soul, you ghouls!
-
Grow a soul, you ghouls!
I think I'm growing a beard just from watching that last night. Some sort of contact beard high or something.
Tom.
-
When I looked up from what I was doing to see Fleet Foxes playing, it was a full 10 seconds before I realized that guy wasn't Will Forte doing a character.
I actually found myself laughing during most of the show, I think there must be something wrong with me.
-
Wow. That was rough.
And were those MacGruber sketches actually ads or not? They weren't "during" the show and there was no audience laughter, which makes me wonder if the audience even saw them?
-

Yeah, I think they were actual Pepsi ads. I wonder if they will re-air during the Super Bowl.

Holy moley. I have no idea what to say to that. That's pretty lame is the gut reaction though...
-
Yeah, I was confused if those were real ads or not too. Something tells me they won't air much except during SNL though.
-
i know laughed a few times at last nights snl but for the life of me I can't remember at what
-
Does anybody actually like the McGruber sketches? I didn't even like it the first time let alone the 80th.
-
I dunno about like. But Will Forte can get a laugh out of me from almost anything, even if the Macgruber stuff is tired I still don't look away.
I did laugh at the way Kenan pronounce issues though, and also Steve Martin's getup in that sketch too.
-
It seems like every other sketch features Will Forte talking under his breath and Kristen Wiig doing some sort of quirky character.
-

shock-effect IF someone had shelled-out for a can of Pillsbury’s fudge icing and then had the family gnaw away.
-
yep, they were ads.

I so wish you had been right.
-
I didn't watch much of the game, did they play it a bunch?
-
Just once.
-
This week was a good one for setting the bar back to reasonable limits. People must remember that the show is usually a bit of a stinker with good spots, rather than Tina Fey doing Sarah Palin. Also, the loss of Amy Poehler is showing.
Good to see Joe Biden get back in a skit. I'm a big fan of Fred Armisen, but that Bernie Madoff skit was rough. I was waiting for the kicker or the weird twist, but nope.
I think we all agree that Steve Martin needs to just write witty one-pagers for the New Yorker now.
-
Just think of the Steve Martin shows as necessary steps to another Alec Baldwin appearance — he's two back now, so he can host without tying the record.
-
Alec Baldwin up next and royalties required for Tom with the Sajak's brother sketch.
-
I laughed at the jokes!
-
I laughed when fake-bjork said that more than half of icelands gdp comes from screaming.
-
It was not good at all. I liked the "badguy" sketch, and only a bit.
It's very, very frustrating, as the constituent parts have never been stronger, yet the outcome has rarely been dimmer (the 80's were rough, admittedly).
What. The. Heck.
Tim and Eric claim that SNL is pulling a lot from their show lately (and obviously there's a lot of cross-over, with Hader, Armisen, etc...), but I just don't see it.
BUT, you know what? I've watched it every Saturday (or taped it) since about 1983, and I ain't gonna stop. I made it through Denis Miller's Weekend Update, I can make it through anything.

-
I laughed when fake-bjork said that more than half of icelands gdp comes from screaming.

Yeah, she was pretty good. Except Wiig couldn't manage the trademark nails-on-blackboard screech.
I was interested to learn that Pat and Mike Sajak have another brother.
-
I made it through Colin Quinn's Weekend Update, I can make it through anything.
-
That Today sketch was too much of a straight impersonation to be funny. I was totally mesmerized by it, because it pretty much felt exactly like what the real show does too.
I could see the Tim & Eric argument some lately though I think, a little bit.
Also - (http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y114/stevenmiller/quadlow.jpg)
-
I think EVERYTHING is taking bites out of Tim and Eric these days. One could consider it fair play for all the awkward moments they have co-opted from all other media, but I still hope it doesn't dilute the stock.
Topic-wise, Bill Hader's interpretation of Jame Gumb was for the ages. I didn't just like it a little bit, I was rolling!
-
As much as I hate to say it, novelty music is hip as shit right now.
"On a boat" was funny, hands down. T-Pain. Perfect.
The rest was meh.

After Belushi and Farley They ain't takin' any more chances of ODing tubby comix dudes sooooooooooo if'in you're Sanz or the new tub - you're out before the big WB contract ::).
I liked the Bad Boy/Good Con. bit BUT 'katy lee' DID NOT do her amusing dance.
Oh yeah, I really dug Steve Martin's socks, the Monday after SNL, on Letterman.
Stay on groovin' safari,

I don't know if I was tired or I just like the simple things, but Keenan's bit on Weekend Update had me dying with laughter. I loved it.

Kenan's finest moment in his entire run on the show.

I'm glad somebody agrees! Althought I think he's slowly but surely gotten an okay to good range of characters over the years. He's also lasted longer than I projected he would.

That's what I been sayin too! Anthony Michael Hall was PERFECT for SNL, he just needed 9-12 years to find his comedic voice!!!
I think David Caruso would make a great cast member too.

Miller wasn't so bad, back then. I can't stand his stupid face these days.
Colin Quinn might have been the worst Update host. He muffed his lines constantly. Norm McDonald, who I find hilarious in other contexts, wasn't all that good as an update host.
On a not-very-related note, is Al Franken a Senator now or what? What's going on with that shit?
-
I always laugh when he does the French Def Comedy Jam bit.
-
I thought it was great.
It was also great to see a sketch with Vincent Price, Carol Channing, Richard Burton, etc. in a show who's demographic (for that night especially--Jonas Bros.) would be a good 34 years behind the curve.
Ike
-
On a not-very-related note, is Al Franken a Senator now or what? What's going on with that shit?
Yes, Al Franken is Senator as soon as the state Supreme Court tells Coleman to get a life. And possibly then after the US Supreme Court says they want no part of it. At which point CSpan will either get a lot more or less entertaining. To that end, maybe Jack Handey could run next. Could the Zombie Prevention Act be far behind? I think not!

I thought it was great.
It was also great to see a sketch with Vincent Price, Carol Channing, Richard Burton, etc. in a show who's demographic (for that night especially--Jonas Bros.) would be a good 34 years behind the curve.
Ike
I didn't get to watch the whole episode, but I mostly agree with your "... it was great." statement.
And I always love the Vincent Price sketch. I hope they keep it up, demographics be damned. Hopefully it'll inspire the youngsters to take an interest in some of the more "classic" forms of entertainment.
I've gotta watch the episode again though, I was too tired when I sat down and napped through most of it.

terrible episode
the classroom sketch, where wiig's character gilly kept doing increasingly violent things, was so unfunny, it actually briefly made me think (LESS) of our own Gilly. only fleetingly!
Modified to make sense.
i will say that the gilly skit was totally unfunny overall, but i cannot count the amount of times me and my roomie have said "Giiiiiiilllllyyyy...." at totally random moments. this causes at least 2 minutes of constant laughter. its really become a staple.

That's why my nose has itched for the past month.

now merely reading it makes me laugh, then giggle it off.

Well, the last two hours on NBC may have been the funniest two in television history.
The only thing missin' [A] was this tv ad satire

did anyone like the rock obama?? samberg was great. macgruber was also hilarious.
-
I must be the only one since they keep beating them into the ground but I think the McGruber bits are awful.
The Rock Obama was pretty funny though especially when they said the name.
-
you guys have similar taste in comedy as the Good Morning America crew.
I, however, realize that any skit featuring The Rock is shit.
-
Anyone who dislikes Duane "The Rock" Johnson is clearly unfamiliar with the little-known art film called The Rundown.

Fixed!

In my opinion, The Rock is one of the great entertainers of our time. Anyone who watched WWE during the late 1990's would attest to this.
-
I love The Rock.

WifeyWu and moi 'twere viewing "The Hellbenders" and forgot about SNL.
We did catch half of "Rocket Dog," when we clicked WTOV to view "Star Trek" (TOS), and found it to be most amusing.
The 'Trek' was the one where Spock gets a bone-on. There was a scene, when Spock, McCoy and Kirk beam to Vulcan, that had an extremely well done view of the ceremonial place (Huge elevated walkway - then aerial view of the Stonehengesque place) moi NEVER viewed those before. It was a gas.
And now.....moi's wee film for moi's fans in Knoxville.
SPOILER ALERT: The Jews didn't do it - no one did.

I was impressed that Tracy Morgan memorized his lines to the extent he neither fumbled them nor had to rely on teleprompters.
-
I caught about 10 minutes of last Saturday's show. For some reason, I didn't turn it off when they were doing the scared straight parody, again. Notwithstanding that sketch, there were some funny moments. There's very little substance to Hader's Dateline NBC sketch, but it gave me 24 hours of material to annoy/amuse my wife with.

I like the new YYY song.

-
The YYY's did one of the most pathetic, pandering things I can think of, playing the new song then the MASSIVE old hit. Trying to link both things together in our minds. "So, who's this band again? OH! THOSE GUYS! MAPS, THAT'S RIGHT!" Weakass move.
And that new song....oh boy. What a dooooozy. What a gross steaming dooooozy.
Last night's show was a total dud. They need to have the Rock, Alec B., and Doogie Houser, in that order, week after week.

How dare the Yeh Yeh Yehs (loved D. Pardo's Zieglerized pronunciation) play that song everyone likes instead of some other song nobody has ever heard. 8,000 bands have played their new single and then an older hit on SNL in the past 35 years.
-
I thought the show was funny last night. I l'd ol a number of times. I was a little bryced tho.
-
I thought last night's episode was great. I usually like the ones with hosts that they try to involve as little as possible.

That may be, but it doesn't make it right. The band looked bored (or rather more concerned with their hair and dance moves than the songs), and it was a weak, barely there run-thru of their one and only hit.
If Elvis Costello or Neil Young or any Tom Petty or any other number of bands that put out more than, say, 4 albums plays some 'deep cuts', good on 'em. When fashionistas who will barely be a blip on the cultural radar in 10 years do it, it's completely inauthentic.
Everyone likes that song? Really? I need to reevaluate it, apparently.
-
This is an example of what I have always called "Carsyndrome." I was in college when the first Cars album was released, and it was massive on college radio for about three weeks; then commercial radio starting playing "My Best Friend's Girl", and it was a strong success, and suddenly college radio hipsters were offended if you suggested they ever like the Cars. You would literally see the noses point upwards. Happened with U2 as well.
How dare they have a song that anyone's ever heard of!

I agree. They are pathetic, pandering assholes. DEEP CUTS OR GO HOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
-
I think it was kinda cool how Harold Ramis was playing drums for that fashion show.
-
Yeah, real artistic credibility on SNL is all about making a statement. Like when Men Without Hats played "Cocoricci (Le Tango des Voleurs)" instead of "The Safety Dance" in early '83.
The audience hated it, but those dudes kept their fucking integrity at 10.

The Blah Blah Blah's new song was, simply put, abysmal. I honestly got more enjoyment out of Taylor Swift, another artist about whom I know very little, than that abortion of a song that the YYY's played.
Trying to cover that up with the older song that is, admittedly, much catchier and has a vague adornment of a chorus/verse/tension, was cheap. People like the song? That is super great--when I like a song I obviously want to hear a band play it, sometimes ad nauseum. But this one, ick. Just icky.
NOW if, by some stroke of magic, Dinosaur Jr. plays SNL this summer, you better believe I'll EXPECT to hear an older tune. They've earned that by not sucking too much. This, of course, will never be the case.
I look forward to seeing a rock band on SNL that's really great sometime in the future. I hope for this.
Who do we get? Fleet Foxes (Poco). YYY's (BAD Blondie). Kanye West (weirdo pop, I guess).
I WANTS THE ROCK. It's double gnarly as in the pre-internet/pre-cable days (or when cable was, like, 8 channels for us in NoDak) SNL was the only place I got to see new music. There were several bands that sorta blew my mind years ago--I hope some other little kid gets that once in a while. I guess they got myspace for that now.

Well I think this whole train of thought is pretty stupid, but you are correct in one thing: The Yeah Yeah Yeahs are garbage.

You guys sure watch SNL.

It pertains to the thread. Not sure what's stupid about "this train of thought" in particular, but that's a message board for ya.
That said, it's nice to have discourse in any area of your life. Makes it less mundane.

Yah, reminds me of Todd Ruundgren's show of integrity when I saw him in concert, and he did 13 songs from an album that was not yet released, a song by The Call, and a song by Red Ryder.
I am still pissed about the 4 songs he did that he is known for. Sell-out!
-
+1 for Hugman, if we had that sort of e-rep thing on the boards.
Now time for sad admission, I could watch Forte say Gilly for 5 minutes straight. No need for anyone else in the sketch at all, just him, saying it, in different inflections, over and over again.
/easily amused.

Note to Seth Meyers: It's Baldacci, you boob.
