It's times like this that I'm proud to be from Massachusetts. My dude won! Go John Tierney! (John Kerry is dead to me but I guess I'm glad the other guy didn't win) All the questions went my way! 1. Taxes are necessary! We're not called Taxxachusetts for nothing! We can take an income tax, we're grownups! Share the wealth! 2. So long, doing time for a joint! 3. So long, dog racing!
How'd your state do by you?
:D ;) :)
-
Not only did Colorado go thoroughly blue and elect a Democratic senator, we kicked the awful Marilyn Musgrave out of the House.
My own district just elected the first openly gay House member.
-
MD never lets me down. And Baltimore City went 88% for Obama.
They did vote yes on slots, which I'm not a fan of, but I couldn't be happier.
-
I'll let you know later.
-
Hey you know - even though I still live in a RED state ...
The popular vote in this wasteland (Nebraska) was about 50/50 so ... just WOW ...
Nebraska, I had no idea, no faith, nothing.
Good on ye, Bugeaters!
Downtown tonight was like football Saturday here. Crazy pro-Obama. I was shocked!

Washington will become the second state to allow doctors to prescribe lethal doses of medication for terminally ill patients seeking to hasten their deaths.
Initiative 1000 — referred to by supporters as a "death-with-dignity" act and by opponents as an "assisted-suicide" measure — was leading across the state Tuesday.
Also, we re-elected our Democrat governor in what was considered the closest gubenatorial election in this cycle.
Sent 7 Democrats and 2 Republicans to the House.
And of course, selected Obama/Biden.

Also, no toll booths! Now I can take my suicide pills while driving and not have to sew change pockets into my death shroud.

Judging from the people celebrating, I don't think anyone wants the suicide pills anymore. :D

While I'm glad that CA supported Obama instead of McCain, considering how voters here are voting on the Propositions so far, California can fall into a sinkhole for all I care. Just frickin' sink.
-
I'm proud that Maine favored Obama 58.24% to 39.93%, saddened that my county gave him only 50% to 48%, but jubilant that my town went for him 60% to 39%. And I'm glad the casino was voted down. But I'm depressed that the repeal of the modest beverage tax that funded a health care program for low-income Mainers, especially children, passed.
Oh, and the Republican senator was voted back in, but that was bound to happen.
-
My homeland of Colorado finally did the right thing
-
Florida didn't mess it up!
Sarasota and Alachua counties went blue!
-
Ontario is very proud of all of you!

You passed Prop. 2 (the one that outlaws veal pens and stuff), at least. That's great news!

I'm glad we did Ontario proud finally. Somehow, America feels a little more Canadian today.

YAY: Minnesota voted for Obama.
BOO: the 6th District re-elected Michelle Bachmann. A lot of people are going to attempt to use that as proof that Minnesota is full of crazy assholes, but every town inside its borders is a suburban enclave that has nothing to do with the culture that gave us Prince and the Coen Brothers and Husker Dude. Less flattering is the fact that Norm Coleman (imagine Diamond Joe Quimby from the Simpsons, only opportunist enough to actually switch parties) has apparently beaten Al Franken by less than 400 votes. This is gonna result in a mandatory recount, the results of which aren't going to manifest themselves until December, and it's going to result in the ugliest couple months in Minnesota political history.
-
Oklahoma is the only state in the country that didn't have one county go in favor of Obama.
-
woo hoo?

exactly.

thats friggin' awesome!

No one in the Sooner State got the memo?

Virginia now has two democratic senators, a democratic governor, and democratic control of the State Senate and State House.
We also gave our electoral votes to a Democrat for the first time since 1964.
Unbelievable.

From Colorado? Cuz Barney Frank's been out since 1987.

I meant *our* first, sorry.

Oh, and the Republican senator was voted back in, but that was bound to happen.
The GOP would do wisely to learn from her example, while soul-searching for its future identity.

Colorado county calls it even: Obama, McCain tie at 11,223
http://www.rockymountainnews.com/news/2008/nov/05/colorado-county-calls-it-even-obama-mccain-tie-112/
Also one of my classmates (a 3L at CU Law) was just elected regent of the University of Colorado.

The problem with the 6th district is that it's huge and a lot of cities don't get represented fairly. Blue collar suburban cities have to have the same representative as the people out in the far edge of the suburbs with lots of land and it goes all the way into St. Cloud and areas around St. Cloud that feel no connection to the cities. They need to rework those boundaries in a big way.
I didn't think the Senate race could get any uglier than it was- easily the ugliest race I've ever witnessed, but it has. At least I can avoid it for the most part and don't have to listen to them beating each other up in the middle of sitcom reruns.

That's true. I was happy that passed. One of the few things we got right.
But Prop. 8 also passed. And so did a high-speed rail bill. The majority of voters would rather have an expensive rail system, than give people equal rights. I've officially lost all faith in humanity.

Don't lose faith in humanity. Humanity is (very slowly) getting better. The majority of voters are old fucks. They'll die soon and the world will be all the better for it.
-
Did anyone say high-speed rails?!
-
What's wrong with the high speed rail bill?
-
I thought they meant the other kind of rails.
-
I am not sure if this goes in this thread but...
Merkley wins!!!
http://www.oregonlive.com/news/index.ssf/2008/11/jeff_merkley_defeats_gordon_sm.html (http://www.oregonlive.com/news/index.ssf/2008/11/jeff_merkley_defeats_gordon_sm.html)
This is great.
-
What's wrong with the high speed rail bill?
Usually, nothing. Well, it's expensive, but apart from that usually nothing. Anyway, it's not really the bill itself that bugged me, it's the fact that it was preferred over the rights of people living here. It felt superficial, and it left me feeling cold. I don't know, I'm probably reading too much into it. :-\

AZ is red.
TN is red.
i don't know about pride. this year i registered in AZ instead of doing absentee for TN, and this state is insane. they voted no on same-sex marriage, they voted no on voters having to approve new taxes or spending, and voted no on tightening the rules for employers who hire illegal immigrants. im confused.

In my opinion (which is simply parroting the opinion of peak oil doomsayer James H. Kunstler) investing in the rail system is just about the smartest thing a government could do right now.
-
I think there's definitely a connection between the high-speed rail project and the gay marriage ban. Gay marriage in California as it currently stands is one thing, but once they put in mag-lev trains, what's to stop everyone from hopping on and getting gay married all over the damn place?!

Why is this thread not called State Proide?
-
We re-elected congressman John Hall, who helped bring the world "Still the One" and "Dance With Me".

And my home state of Indiana went blue for president for the first time in 40+ years.
-
Seeing my home state of Indiana go blue was the second biggest thrill of the night. Not enough to make me want to move back, though. ;D
-
My knowledge in math never advanced past the Pythagorean theorem.
Can someone explain to me how McCain won in Missouri by 5,868 votes. Yet Jay Nixon, a Democrat, was elected Governor by a margin of 541,491 votes?
DFK? Julie? Any statisticians? Professor Fotchan? Please tell.
-
Since no one from Illinois has stepped up yet, you're welcome.

I loved that bit.

Sounds like he was an extremely popular four term attorney general in MO.

vs. a six term member of Congress?

Sure, a Rep. for a mostly rural district vs. the guy who prosecuted annoying telemarketers for Missourians? I can see it.

I agree. An AG is a sexier job than a Rep.--Spitzer was a rock star for awhile, until he was Gov.
I just don't understand how McCain fared so well in MO. MO's Democratic candidates received a 100,000 more votes in their Congressional Districts than Republicans, 500,000 more for Governor, yet Obama loses by 6,000? It just doesn't add up to me. Which is fine.
I'll attribute my anxiety to being the only State not assigned a patriotic color!

I am the last one to say race is an issue almost anywhere, but in Missourri race was the issue.
-
I'd be more concerned if the pollsters thought something seemed off (http://www.fivethirtyeight.com/2008/11/what-in-hell-happened-in-alaska.html). MO is a complicated state, but it's not like it's something people don't recognize. It's always been a complicated place politically.

Too much pork in politics.
-
Arkansas chose McCain 59%. I'm guessing there was some major turnout by Southern Baptist rural voters. Also, this state is made up of 59% plumbers.
I'd heard Arkansas was going to go red but all the Obama yard signs in my neighborhood threw me off.
-
Anyone else hoping for scandalous news to come out of Alaska? The discrepancy between the polls and the so-called actual results is very fishy.
-
I don't know if any of y'all have been to Nebraska, but ....
This is amazing:

-
At Obama HQ in Bloomington, Indiana on Election Day morning, they were realistically just hoping Indiana would be 'too close to call' well into the night.
Seeing it go blue was a great feeling indeed!
-
The Alaska vote is very, very fishy. I'd be willing to bet there was electoral fraud.
-
Wouldn't it be great? Especially if it turns out Palin was behind it all? I hope this one doesn't just disappear because everyone's so relieved Obama won.
-
Yes, I saw that Nate Silver was pulling a "WTF?!?" over Alaska.
-
I've been reading fivethirtyeight.com throughout the election. Too bad blogspot crapped out on him on election day.
-
Nate Silver called the final election results almost to the decimal point. Pretty amazing. I'm way too much of a statisticaldummy to understand his methods, but I will definitely turn to his polls in future elections.
-
I expected nothing less from one of the guys behind Baseball Prospectus which I rely on very heavily every year for fantasy baseball.
-
He's already ranking the 2010 Senate races "from 1 to 35 in order of their likelihood of changing hands to the opposition party."
I bet even President Obama took a couple days off.
-
Yeah, but he's got a life; I'm not so sure about Nate Silver.
-
The guy is seemingly some sort of prodigious savant. He'll redefine the methodology for political polling before he's done.
-

I just wish he was more polite to Rachel when he's on the show, prodigious savants, you know how those people are.
-
He's definitely a little deficient when it comes to social skills. I like best the way he just says "yeah" when someone welcomes him to a show. He reminds me of all the nerdy boys I've been kind to over the years.

I've seen him on both Countdown and Rachel Maddow and while he's definitely socially deficient, I don't think it's out of intended rudeness. I think he does better than I would in a similar position. I noticed he's sporting some fancy Sarah Palin-esque glasses the last time I saw him on there.
