The season opener was easily the worst SNL I've ever seen. I wasn't expecting much from a Megan Fox SNL, but that was just awful.

What about the new girl dropping the F bomb.

Charli Rocket?

Did it make air? Don't they run with a delay?

The script said "frickin'" and she said "fuckin'". But it sounded just like "frickin'". Big whoop.

Martin,
In America, the showing of a nipple or a swear word on a free television channel, as opposed to a cable television show a click away, is a matter of huge national importance and subjects the offender to enornmous fines, potentially in the millions, possible criminal sanction, and Congressional hearings. I would not expect a foreigner like yourself to understand the distinction.

Take it to Canada, Freedom Hater - we like generating legal documents! And, we don't have a problem with half of the shows on TV being about gory murder investigations, just don't show us boobs or WE WILL FLIP OUT.

Also, kind of mean to send Jenny out for her first sketch at 12:45 with a bunch of tongue-twisters.

I know. I just had to watch that clip ten times to actually catch the "fuckin'".

I blame this on Bono, both the swearing and the unfunniness.

Worst ever, Gilly? Really? You must not have seen the one with Geena Davis. Or Steven Seagal. Or Madonna as host. Or Milton Berle.
I do want to know what Lorne's doing to those ocelots in that video that Kenan must have in a secured lockbox, though.

"Knock knock. Who's there? Just kidding."

I liked the oh shit face the new girl made when she dropped the f-bomb. Funniest part of the episode.

Quick! Someone paste the Ernie Anastos co-anchor somewhere and we'll have ourselves a meme!

If you knew "frickin" would be hard to do without easily slipping and actually swearing, why not use "effin"? Or maybe they could spend the summer writing sketches that are actually funny.

Didn't Paul Schaffer drop the F-bomb on SNL years ago? I probably spelled that wrong.

I definitely remember reading that before. People always mention Charles Rocket but it sounds like it's happened a few times before (including musical performances). I think Shaffer's was a similar incident where he said fuck instead of some word that rhymed with it. Does anybody know what the context of Charles Rocket's slip was?

The February 21, 1981 episode hosted by Dallas star Charlene Tilton featured a parody of the famed Who Shot J.R.? episode of Dallas. In the episode, Rocket was shot in the chest by a sniper while doing a sketch about a sexy couple (with Gail Matthius as his partner) bathing a dog and spouting innuendo. At the end of the show, as cast members traditionally gathered around the host to say good night, Tilton asked Rocket how he felt about being shot. In character, a wheelchair-using Rocket improvised, "Oh, man, it’s the first time I've ever been shot in my life. I'd like to know who the fuck did it", followed by the cast and audience reacting with shock and laughter.

I feel bad for Jenny Slate. I hope she doesn't get in trouble.
-
I hope they bring Slate back, although NBC will want her head.
Kristen Wiig was a pro and didn't even flinch, but you could see in Jenny's eyes where she suddenly realized "Oh no. I am handling live hand grenades on air."
Then the sketch shifts and suddenly each "frickin'" was now regarded as a potential f-bomb, and everyone is overly conscious of each of these little trap doors coming up in the script. It suddenly became this endurance marathon. I could barely watch.
-
I saw it online and it sounded like fuck but then went to the episode I DVRed and it sounded like another frick, they must have edited it for the west coast. They should give her a break, first ep and all. At least it's not been blown out of proportion by the media... oh wait.

They edited that for the West? I'm not surprised they did. I don't think Lorne Michaels thought, "it's not fair if I change it for other time zones."
I'll mail my DVR to you. It was so clear I did a double take and said "what?" out loud.

It's online now. It's pretty clear. It's live TV, they should give her a break.

I think Will Forte also said "fuckin" in one of the Digital Shorts, but it was "bleeped" so I'm not sure! Also: bleeping out bad words remains INCREDIBLY FUNNY. Every time I think Arrested Development took that little game as far as it could go, SNL proves me wrong time and time again. Zut alors!
Speaking of funny, how about those COLD OPENINGS?! So taut! Really tear into current events with razor-sharp blade edge.

Last year in the middle of all the election bullshit, I was AMAZED by how many people kept saying the cold opens were the best part of the show. Man, they're just so awful. And they always seem to go on for 8 minutes.

Yeah, I'm amazed when people say this show has gone down hill. It is what it always was - live TV with lots of awful shit, some mildly funny bits, one or two good sketches. It's supposed to be disposable throw-away comedy.
Don't agree? Go watch a whole show -- the whole goddamn hour and a half -- from whatever cast you think was the best & you'll see what I mean. You'll be tearing your hair out by oh, 40 minutes in.
-
It baffles me why people bother watching SNL. Wait for a compilation DVD of the 45 funny minutes from one of the cast member's careers or something. You'd be better served polishing off any random selection from your Netflix queue than watching that unfunny junk.
-
the cussing was in the last sketch of the night anyway, right? close to 1am.
the second unofficial digital short (with almost nsfw blurred out bits) and your mom talks to meghan fox while you get ready were great. even in softball stuff like the stewardess one kristin wiig is awesome. same with hader.

I just want to say, I don't really hate the show - some awesome people have written for it and/or been cast members. It's just the nature of the beast - topical content=short shelf life, live, one week to pull it off, etc. that the show has always been very uneven in terms of laffs.
a group of pals o' mine came up with the theory that any given SNL sketch is always funnier when you try and tell someone who didn't watch the show what the premise of the sketch was. it takes 30 seconds or less to explain what the cast members have to play out for 5 interminable minutes.
"Belushi is Yojimbo, and he runs a delicatessen ... "
-
She should be given a bonus for letting that slip because otherwise people would be either talking about how awful the episode was or not talking about it all. That it was hidden at the end of an episode that delivered zero laughs gives a person the idea that it was planned. I mean, there can't be anybody on the writing staff who were pleased with what they came up with... but they didn't have a whole lot to work with. Who's the genius who decided Megan Fox and U2 would start the season off with a bang?
-

My friends always say the same thing and I try defending SNL, mainly because I know a lot of funny people are writing there (Simon Rich, John Mulaney) and there are many great performers, but I'm thinking everything about the format and process behind SNL restrict the show from being any good.
Being a live show isn't very appealing, especially since the only sketches people remember from the past few years (aside from the Palin stuff) were taped digital shorts by the Lonely Island guys. I also never got why the show had to be live if Lorne Michaels would freak out if people improved. If it's going to be live, I'd want spontaneity. And having a 65-year old as your show runner doesn't help things either.
-

Yabbut imitations of him have lead to pure comedy gold! (Dr Evil & Pharmaceutical CEO in Brain Candy, too lazy to look up character name)

I'm really upset Studio 60 is not around anymore. I would have enjoyed seeing this kerfuffle eventually dramatized into a 60 minute arc, with several monologues on free speech and our collectively inconsistent morality.

Eh. I wasn't a fan of Studio 60. IMO, it was excruciatingly preachy, condescending, and unfunny garbage masquerading as "sophisticated" drama. I say good riddance.
With regards to SNL, I think jamesp summed up my feelings on the show pretty well. I think as long as Lorne is running the show, I wouldn't expect things to change too dramatically.
On a side note, I've caught reruns of some Dick Ebersol-era episodes and they really aren't that bad as people say.

You're right. Unfortunately, the sarcasm detector doesn't seem to be working tonight.
Sorry for misinterpreting your post, gravy boat.

I apologize for laughing a couple of times during the stewardess sketch. I didn't realize I wasn't supposed to.
-
I apologize for laughing a couple of times during the stewardess sketch. I didn't realize I wasn't supposed to.
Kristen Wiig was spectacular during that bit and I laughed too.
-
Yeah, I enjoyed Wiig in the flight attendant bit as well, and it reminded me of that Air Traffic Controller bit with Neil Patrick Harris in drag last year, which was funny, or maybe it just reminded me of Kids in the Hall, I don't know. Either way, not a great first episode, but I think people are being to hard on SNL as a whole. After all, the last few seasons have built up some goodwill for me, even if I've never seen a completely funny episode. It's still one of the more interesting ninety minutes of comedy on the air each week.
-
My grandmother knows Jenny Slate (or her grandmother, at least) and asked if I could find if she appeared and where online for her and my grandfather. I'm going to hope they don't think to Google her on their own.
-
They'll probably survive even if they do.
-
How sad that Daveheart was by far the best sketch of the night. Although that seemed awfully Jack Handey-ish, is he writing occasionally for the show?
Even that sketch was overshadowed by some of the outtakes of great episodes past.
-
I actually really enjoyed "What Up With That?" just because of the pure absurdism of it. I'm a sucker for a slow(ish) build up to more and more insanity in a skit. I still stand by the statement that Kenan is better than people give him credit for.
-
Well, I think he's GOTTEN better. Playing for so long with such profoundly weird comics as Will Forte, Fred Armisen, Bill Hader and Andy Samberg seems to have made him more comfortable doing weirder and more complex humor.
-

Yes. You are correct, sir!
-
This is obvious, but the most troubling and confounding thing about SNL is that in order to become a writer on the damn thing, one must need to be such a comedy nerd, such a consumer of sketchdom, that most of the output of the show would be considered embarrassing. And yet, the show exists; these things are written. What gives?
The current cast is amazing, though. Wiig is nearly a living legend.
-
I think Kenan excels at the reaction shot, and falters when he's given too much dialogue. If I made a movie, I would cast him in a Silent Bob-esque role.
-
Wiig is nearly a living legend.
Ali. Dylan. Wiig. Seems about right, except not in that order.
-
My friend just described "Daveheart" to me in an email tirade where he seemed to have given up entirely on SNL after last night. I couldn't help but giggle at the title though, and now wish I'd stayed up to watch and see this Dave at work.
-
Wiig is nearly a living legend.

I definitely rate Wiig higher than those two goofballs.

I Youtube'd "Daveheart" but all I got was this -

Those digital shorts just keep getting more and more absurdist.
-

You misspelled "shitty."
-
I really enjoyed "threw it to the ground", actually. The concept is almost Wurster-esque, one might say.
-
Has anybody else noticed that the skits get better as the show goes on this year? The first sketches have been awful and it continued this week with the terrible ESPN alien sketch. Last night had a few good ones, but they really need to bring somebody else on board so Kenan doesn't have to play all of the black characters not named Obama. I think he's ok and has really done a much better job this year but he's out of place with a lot of stuff they ask him to do.
-
My son thought the alien skit was the funniest thing he's seen all year. Ain't different tastes grand?
-

He should definitely see the original (http://www.hulu.com/watch/61233/saturday-night-live-sports-show), then, which I definitely thought was funny this spring. I'm disappointed that they went back to that well.
-

Carping about SNL is for pretentious college kids. Either you like it or you don't. I've really enjoyed the show during the post Ferrell period. Lots of loopy weirdos (Wiig, Armisen, Hader, Forte) and no shouting alpha male types. IIRC there was a stretch when Dratch, Poehler, and Rudolph were in a lot of sketches that I liked a lot too.
-
OK, I forgot that link formed a Hulu embed, and a wrong one at that. Andy From Knoxville should see this video (http://tinyurl.com/c39gnj).
-
If they play their cards right, this might be the worst episode yet this season. The Rear Window sketch might be one of the worst and painfully long SNL sketches I've ever seen.
-

Forget the premise, how does a Hitchcock impression that lazy make it to air? This episode gave me a lot to ponder.
-
It is going to be really really difficult to be worse than the Drew Barrymore episode.
-

Didn't see much but I actually thought the last skit was verry funny -- when they were looking at clouds.
-
I always like the Jon Bovi appearances just because Will Forte's facial expression makes me crack up. The skits were terrible though... especially the digital short but those are always awful.

Yeah, she pretty much just comes off like she is stone-cold Betty Draper in real life.
And Bobby Moynihan's Hitchcock impression was pretty much a poor man's Lorne Michaels.

The Today sketch at the top of the show was painfully awkward the way they were trying to cram January Jones into it. She played the animal handler and had about four lines in the whole thing. What a dud she is...

Yeah, on SNL she came off like an untalented dullard but on Fallon she came off more like a giggling ditz. Either way, I don't know how they get decent acting out of her on Mad Men.

i don't think they do. she's not particularly good on the show - i think a lot of the "coldness" people talk about in her character is just bad, wooden acting.

I agree. I posted this on the AV Club's comments regarding this SNL and Ms. Jones:
"Also, an article somewhere pointed out that January Jones is a bad actor on Mad Men and ever since then I've realized that her blank expressions work well for the character of Betty Draper but they're not by design, she just doesn't know how to act. So instead of the silent brooding emotions you can see roiling beneath the surface of Jon Hamm, January Jones's face is like a porcelain doll, it serves the story and is pretty to look at, but you can tell there's no thoughts going on behind the facade. But she's the lone weak spot on that acting slate."

I said decent, I don't think she's in the same league as Jon Hamm by a long shot but she doesn't ruin the show. I think that the character is a cold B and she pulls it off because it's easy.
-
january jones is a great actress until you see her not acting.
any snl with a wiigstrip will get a free pass from me.
-
I dunno, I think past a basic level of competence good acting is just good casting. She's good enough in Mad Men. On SNL she was a real drag.
Bill Hader I'd like to see in real serious drama. That guy's got it.

I blame the divorce on New Bobby. Or Billy, or whatever his name is.

gotta say - tonight's JGL episode is a million percent better than last week. i rarely lol, but it's happened a couple of times thus far.
-
wow, the episode really dipped after i posted that.
-
I liked his monologue and he's definitely the best host they've had in a long time. My favorite sketch was easily Fred Armisen as the fat fill-in host for the woman's advice show.
-
It was not the greatest episode by any means but at least the guy put forth a real effort.
-
why isn't JGL a superpopular sex symbol?
is it his talent, high indie flick ratio, and lack of chat show appearances?
-

I think he's quite the handsome man and it's great that he always looks incredibly happy on these shows. Take that, Robert Pattinson!
-
I actually really dug the Jack Johnson show skit if only for the lost animals bit and Samberg saying random things such as "hemp necklace!". Also, I think What Up With That is a repetitive proof skit if they keep them as crazy as the first two have been. Jake the Snake Roberts was an awesome touch and again, Sudeikis dancing always gets the lolz.

I couldn't stop laughing at Sudeikis, Anytime the shot was wide enough that he was in it I was laughing out loud. The best was the look on Mindy Kaling's face when they were out of time.
The Jack Johnson thing was funny JGL caught Mraz's douchiness pretty well... cargo shorts.
-
Good stuff this week!
-
JGL=NPH of this season. (though NPH had a better episode)
-
I was just watching old clips of "The Falconer" on Hulu and it got me wondering why this character hasn't been on the show in like two years. Why does Kristin Wiig get like three of her awful characters on each week and it feels like three weeks go by before Will Forte has something on.
-
gotta say - tonight's JGL episode is a million percent better than last week. i rarely lol, but it's happened a couple of times thus far.
Agreed Samir. I was in love with last season, but the Levitt episode was the first truly solid episode from this season. Sad that it took until November.
Nevertheless, I will still watch every episode until either I die or it dies.
-
They just did a parody of the Gathering of the Juggalos infomercial that might be one of my favorite SNL things in quite some time.

I saw this and was disturbed at how similar yet different it was. They really got the essence down right (the hosts and absurd attractions...ventriloquists on stilts!) but i think for us FOT we were even more entertained by this than the audience would have been. Methinks friend of the show John Mulaney may have had a hand in this creation?

Yeah, I mean PFT and Tom have forever changed the words "helicopter ride" for me. Their discussion about it was one of the funniest things I've heard this year.
I thought Sudeikis was incredible in the skit. I rewatched it twice just for his exclamations and facial expressions.
-
It was funny enough as a random skit, but I don't see how anyone who hadn't heard the Best Show take first would get it. The only bit that someone unfamiliar with the video would even be able to recognize as juggalo, was the phrase "my ninja" if I recall correctly. Odd, but probably not so odd!
One more thing. Every lady I know should dress like Rhianna dressed for her performances tonight, every day of their lives.

not a solid episode of television but the potato chip bit was great and the gathering of the juggalos thing was fantastic.
the still of ASS DAN is the best thing SNL has aired in a decade.

Yeah, the "under-underground" fest was perfect. "Yo, we got LOOSE ALLIGATORS all up in this!"
I think it still would have still been funny for people unfamiliar with the JuggaloFest -- albeit a whole lot more confusing. That might be my own bias though ... I tend to laugh at things I find totally inexplicable or left-field.
-
Potato Chip and Underground fest sold me on the show. I love how almost nobody laughed during the Potato Chip skit. They were all uncomfortable sounding. What's wrong with people?!

I was wondering if people laughed. I couldn't tell because I was laughing so hard at will forte's accent.
-
This episode was by no means great but I think it was the best this season. Though it was another cheesy monologue, Bill Hader's Animal cracked me up for some reason. I had just about fallen asleep when the Kickspit Underground Rock Festival bit came on. I thought it was a hilarious dream. Though it was a bit over the top and kind of sophomoric, I did laugh at the Vagasil bit too.
-
Will Forte can do that dumb, deer in the headlights bit all the time, and I'll laugh even if the jokes aren't that funny. Forte and Sudekis are easily the highlights of SNL right now. Kenan has been better this season but they're using him too much.

REE-AWW-NAAAWW!!!

I think that A Very Gilly Christmas (http://feedproxy.google.com/~r/nymag/vulture/~3/LtQ3rnAy6x0/gilly_to_ruin_christmas.html) will take the award for all-time worst.
-
Maybe I am looking too far into it but recently Bill Hader has been saying "Oh Boy" in a Scharpling/Wurster type fashion.

You're not the only one.

Was there a glitch just now in the final sketch?
-
I thought the same thing. They cut out and you could clearly hear Barkley continuing.
I liked Barkley a lot, especially in that movie quote game show skit.
-
anyone ready to join me on the Wiig bandwagon?

I didn't see it live, but Charles Barkley dressed as Alicia Keys has made my month.

I hope Season Six (aka the inaugural lost season, '80-'81) gets released end of year, which has the quasi-official worst SNL sketch ever, The Leather Weather Report
-
I highly doubt Lorne Michaels will let it be released as he doesn't even want anything from that era to be rerun (although it's been a few years now since older SNLs were being run on a network...so maybe that would change now). One would hope that for history's sake he would just allow it to be released.
I just cannot wait for around the 1988 and later seasons to come out. I NEED LOVITZ!

I want 85-86 released just for the Francis Ford Coppola episode. It's right up there with Charles Grodin's in terms of messing with the format.

Keenan completists take note: They played the "What up wit dat" song at the Cavs/Celtics game today, following a questionable foul.

They better have had a dancing Sudekis on the jumbotron.

The faulty information about curling in the Jennifer Lopez episode was shocking.

Hey, WU included a mention of the closing of the last sardine-packing plant in the US. Sure, it was just an excuse to make fun of sardines, but it was still thrilling. It was as though they were talking about my town! So exciting.
(I'm very sad about the closing of the plant, by the way. From twenty-one plants in its heyday, when it was the sardine-packing capitol of the country, over the course of a few decades Lubec went to two, then one, and finally none when Stinson closed its plant next door to me nine years ago. It was an awful blow to the town. And now there are no sardine-processing plants anywhere in Maine--or indeed the rest of the country. It's the end of a world. Sure, the jobs were badly paid and the work tedious, but it was a hell of a lot better than nothing. Which is what's here now.)
-
i need to rewatch it today, but the parts i caught last night were pretty good. the ICP video at the end was the cherry on top.
i thought the shake weight bit was pretty good (the black-and-white part was great), and it kind of had a tim & eric feel to it. oddly enough, the fake phone number SNL used at the end was the same phone number "awesome show" uses for cinco products (800-555-0199). coincidence?
-
It seems whenever SNL uses the guest as little as possible it turns into a good show. Which makes sense.
-
Bobby Moynihan's face looks slightly better in juggalo make-up, but I still hate it.

That's because the make-up is permanent and he normally wears an additional layer of flesh-toned make-up over it on SNL, like Nicholson in Batman. You probably don't believe me, but wiki it, it's true!

That explains why his "normal face" bugs me so much. I believe they call it the "unfunny valley" effect.
-
Hey guys, late to the party, sorry about that.
Someone just told me SNL is a COMEDY show!?!?!?
What the hell!?
Can someone explain this to me?
-
Ease up on the gas pedal there, slipperyslope.

As a person who has seen his own face, I try to refrain from complaining about the flaws of someone else's.

Not even when women make that dumb kissy face in photos?

Mulaney's thing about girl scout cookies was good. It was nice to see him get some on-camera time.

Agreed. I got The Top Part a few months back and it is in a constant rotation with Kyle Kinane's Death of the Party and Matt Braunger's Soak Up the Night.
-
Hey, me and AFK are seeing Mulaney's stand-up tonight. Think he's solid enough with the show mythology that he will have heard of a dfk?

When he sees that box of wine it won't even matter.

Re: Betty White on SNL
Pros: They got an 88 year old lady to essentially do dick jokes for an hour and half
Cons: They got an 88 year old lady to essentially do dick jokes for an hour and half

CSI: Sarasota is basically the funniest thing SNL has done all year long.
-
I don't get why SNL doesn't assemble an all-star cast one year. Just a one year thing of SNL members who are funny but never broke it really big to come back for a memorable season. So Lorne would have a few more contracts to pay, but it would give his show a much needed boost and probably huge ratings.

Honestly, the cast at this point is the one thing I wouldn't want them to change. It's pretty great.

But horribly misused. The most talent, by far, but the worst writing, BY FAR. It was really strange to see the old pros lay waste to the material, too. The NPR skit (easy laughs, I know, but I loved it) was refreshing compared to What's Up With That? or a lame Obama knockoff.
Absolutely agree with you about the talent level, though. The evidence of this can be seen on the Vincent Price flashback shows, or the occasional Lawrence Welk skit. Those are right in my wheelhouse, and they're perfect in nearly every way.
This has been my favorite episode (Betty White) in a long, long while.
I feel like SNL's got me in some Stockholm Syndrome-type situation.
-
I would actually say the last couple of years have been better than the late 90's/Will Ferrell era.
-
The last ten minutes of every SNL should be blackbox improv.
YOU'RE WELCOME.
-
I really liked "What's Up With That" this week. Yes, I know it's exactly the same thing every time, but the combination of Sudeikis on one side doing that incredible dance, Morgan Freeman's exasperation and especially Borgnine (BORGNINE!) just sitting there grinning for 5-6 minutes; it was frenetically Lynchian.
-
As much as I want to not like it, the ridiculousness of "What Up With That?" gets me everytime. Especially Sudeikis.
Also, Kanye was pretty great.

Even Lindsey Buckingham cracks me up each and every time. It's literally the same sketch every time, but they could do it every week and I don't think I'd complain. Everyone just seems to be having so much fun.
However I am officially over Kristen Wiig. Her one showcase sketch this week was awful and they now have other women who are funny so... let's just get rid of her.

I fourth(?) this sentiment. "What's Up With That?" cracks me up every single time. The Galifinakis one was probably the best, but Doo-Doo man and Quickie were pretty good. And the slow-motion Sudekis dance had me in tears.
-
Was Andy Samberg doing something last year? He was barely involved in last season and now he's the most featured player.
-

I can't get enough of that. Can someone make an animated gif?

Somebody suggested for Halloween I go as Sudeikis from "What Up With That."
The hardest part by far would be learning the moves!

DeNiro. Horrible. Except the Party at Bernard's short.

The tiny harmonica solo was great. Otherwise, nice work on avoiding using the guest in any meaningful way.

Seconded. These have become fast-forward fodder in the mahgeetah household.

The Pauls episode was pretty great.

I thought it left a great deal to be desired, but I enjoyed McCartney's Camilla. The Meryl Streep bit made me chuckle a bit, too.

Last night's show was OK at best. As great an actor as Jeff Bridges is, SNL style comedy is not where his talents lie.
But the reason I am posting this is because when Jason Sudekis almost cracked up during the Juggalo parody sketch (which always make me laugh) my first thought was "He must have seen a mouse wearing a little cape."
-
I never understand why people laugh at that. I'd be shocked and awed.
Maybe it's nervous laughter.
-
To be honest, I think the late 90's/early 00's SNL was even worse than its current incarnation.
