Just saw this on the twitter!

!!!!!!!!!!
once again, TL and the FOTboard make my already-awesome morning so much better. !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
-
I love this album cover.
-
Go TL!
-
He took my album name suggestion!
-
Wow, really? That's awesome, Jason!
(I know how it feels! :))
-
I hope "Mighty Sparrow" is on this album. That song is incredible.
-
I'm sorry, Martin, I just made that up. I had nothing to do with it.
Now I feel bad. But I am really psyched for this!
-
That smug bee... doesn't it look like a jerk?

He looks subdued. Fits with the all-acoustic folkie thing I heard this would be.

No worries! Considering TL's requests for album title suggestions it wasn't unthinkable that someone here would have something to do with it.

Perfect.

Just read a thread about this record over at the Sound Opinions forum. Those jerks are not quite so complimentary. Since they consider it acceptable to follow up the news of the toxicology report on Jay Reatard's death with a bunch of tasteless coke-related jokes and puns, I can't say I'm surprised.
-
They didn't like the last one, either. Who needs 'em?
-
Does his singing voice turn anybody off a little bit? It kind of sounds a little whiny and emoish.

It did take me a little bit to warm to his voice, but now I'm on board. I'd say give it another chance if you haven't already.

When I was in high school I thought his voice was almost un-listenable, than I saw him live at Lupo's in Providence and realized he was one of the best singers I have ever heard. Stick with it, it's worth it.

Was that the show with The Gang and Kristeen Young opening? December 2007? I was there.
And this beef with his voice (to which I say, you people are fools)? Right before I discovered Ted Leo, I was listening to AFI and Saves the Day, so don't talk to me about unlistenable voices. Ugh.

It very well might have been. For some reason I thought it was him with Jay Reatard, but the more I think about that the less sense it makes, and now I think it was Jay Reatard opening for Spoon later that year. In any case, get over the voice if that's you're problem and you will be so glad you did. He is seriously the best live show I have ever seen.

yeah, me too. I had a John Peel/Undertones' "Teenage Kicks" (where I was openly weeping while driving) when I heard my first Ted Leo song, "Under The Hedge" on the Lookout! Freakout, Vol. 2 comp. It coincided with the beginning of the turning point in my life.
Who better than Ted Leo and The Pharmacists? NO ONE!!!
-
Has anyone else not been able to preorder the album from Matador? The store part of the site is acting strangely- I've used it in the past so I'm assuming the problem isn't on my end.
-
Is it wrong for me to download the leaked copy if I promise to give it rave reviews online and buy it first thing the day it comes out?

I've been able to.
Oddly enough, it just worked, and I didn't do anything differently- maybe it was a temporary problem.
-
I love the new album, but I think Ted's fighting on the wrong side of the Loudness War. I haven't been able to listen to it all the way through yet. It's not as bad as The Go! Team but it still gives me icepick ear.

Too loud or not loud enough?
-
My guess is "too loud".
Dynamics get squashed in favor of "loudness".
There are articles written about this topic. I feel sure.

This is Ted Leo and The Pharmacists, not the Foo Fighters. I do not believe Ted is a dynamics-squasher.

He frequently sounds EXACTLY like Joe Jackson to me. But I like Joe Jackson, and I LOVE Ted. I don't get "emoish" at all. Is there anyone in the business bringing it like Teddy Rockstar? If there is, I have yet to hear them.

This man is the savior of Rock&Roll, if he is turning it up it's probably for a pretty good reason.
-
Playing on the Jimmy Fallon Show tonight. This might be one of the few instances where I wish my TV got broadcast.
-
Liking this more than his last one. I think it sounds way tighter.
Weeks old argument too but I'm kind of into loud Ted. "Woke Up Near Chelsea" is a scorcher.
-
Last week the dude at my local record shop said he heard a promo copy and thought it was weak. Today I go in to get Brutalist Bricks and the Titus Andronicus and the same dude holds up the Ted Leo and says "This is really good"... he was right the second time.

Dusted Magazine (a personal favorite) gave this a rave review: "Leo was impressive even when he was an unmitigated idealist but now, older and less sure of things, he is even better."
-
Speaking as Junior Best Show Shovel.com Liaison (not sure what Matthew Fluxblog's two cents are), 7.9* is pretty conservative. Thompson makes some great cases for the record, but the cases against -- mostly in the lyrics department -- I don't agree with at all. The directness is what makes a lot of it hit hard, if you ask me.
*even though it's a hair away from the equivalent of four stars -- I dunno, focusing on the number ratings without actually reading the article is moron stuff anyways.
-
I thought the shovel review was pretty cranky. The writer talked about the last record - which he didn't like at all - almost more than TBB.
-

I stopped reading after he wrote that LWTL is the kind of thing you rarely listen to. Meanwhile, it's one of the only rock albums of the last four years I've listened to regularly ever since it was released.
-

Man, they love to talk about how much they LOVE Ted over at that site (basically every article about him that isn't a review), but when it comes to reviewing his albums, where's that good will? Better than 7.9, better than Hearts Of Oak's 8.3.

iTunes has a 14th track, "Everything Gets Interrupted".
-
I just got the album this morning! I'm on Mourning in America, right now, and heartily enjoying it.
Anybody going to the Seattle show?
I had a feeling this would happen. My sister-in-law is getting married that weekend and I will be out of town.

amazon has "every dream deferred" listed as their 14th, exclusive track. you can buy it individually as well.

got the LP today. "Bottled In Cork" best song, no doubt. My friend claims that he witnessed Ted writing the lyrics to "Woke Up Near Chelsea" on a matchbook on the T in Boston the morning after the Pharmacists opened for Pearl Jam in Chelsea, Mass. I'll buy it.
-
That is cool - thanks! Waiting to buy the album till i see them live on sunday. Can't wait.

The solo in "Gimme The Wire" is INSANE!!!! Maybe the best solo by anyone ever.
-
Since I can't watch hulu from where I am, I had to look elsewhere for the Jimmy Fallon clip. Just watched it: very good stuff. They nailed it.
-
I've listened to the album three times since I bought it last night. I love it and can't wait to see them on the 27th at the Troubadour. Bottled in Cork is really great and I also really like One Polaroid a Day.
-
I'm somewhat of a newcomer to Ted Leo's music as I've only started really getting into it all over the past few months or so, but I had to post to say how awesome the new album is. I can't stop listening to it. So many stand out tracks its hard to pick a favorite. Also, I got it on iTunes so I got the bonus track "Everthing Gets Interrupted" which, if I may, completely rocked my socks off.

Does anyone know what marathon the version of "That's Entertainment" is from? 2007?
-
Yes. He plays Rock 'n' Roll Dreams'll Come Through on that too, and the awesome Laura Cantrell is the co-host, and does a couple duets. The whole thing is great.

This album gets better and better with every listen.

It's true.
It's a very cohesive album (except for "Tuberculoids Arrive in Hop". That song is straight-up weird, but who said weird was a bad thing?).
And what's with all the Living With The Living hate? That album's great.
-
who said weird was a bad thing?
Not I.
-
And what's with all the Living With The Living hate? That album's great.
I'm not sure. There's a thread about Mr. Leo on the Sound Opinions message board where it's pretty much agreed upon that LWTL is his worst album. I'm not familiar with all of his early work so I can't compare, but I think LWTL is a solid album.

Agreed. I think it's one of his best. Certainly his most diverse.

Seconded. Or thirded. Whatever. It's very good. Still gets a bunch of play from me.
-
I love LwtL, but I would agree it's his weakest as an album. There's not really a unifying production or anything like that. The songs are some of his best, though and I still listen to it pretty damn regularly. My favorite remains Tyranny but I think Bricks may be up there pretty high. I was listening to 8 AM All Day the other day and that's really a phenomenal album, too. "great wall of china" is one of the best songs of all time. Anyway, Ted rules.
-

Awesome guitar work on that song, but man, those lyrics (uncharacteristically, for a Ted Leo song) stink.

Ah! You beat me to it!! I saw the show last night--always amazing as usual! Met Ted after the show and he signed my boyfriend's vinyl copy of the BB album with "DO IT!" (after we told him we were FOTs). I really wanted to get a picture with him, but we could tell he was totally pooped and didn't want to push our luck any further. :D

That was fantastic! Really cool.
Also, if you scroll down the page, you'll see that Starship's "We Built this City" is an option for some band to cover, we can only hope Bryce will have something to do with it (seriously though, The Mountain Goats covering that would seem so out of the ordinary for them, but that might make it all the better, or all the weirder). Superchunk is also being covered.

Just saw TL/RX last night in Portland with my wife. He killed it. Great show. Afterward my wife (who was not too familiar with his stuff) said "That was a really great show. I'll see him over Ben Folds any day" I don't know why Ben Folds would ever pop into anyone's head after just seeing TL but Ted has succeeded in making my life a little bit less... Ben Folds. Thanks Ted.

This was indeed a fantastic show. So much Tyranny!

Nope! Not that I know of, at least. Though it could have been my friend, fellow show-goer, and FOT Mike (who is absurdly tall and likes wearing coats in doors).
I'm very reticent to talk to strangers at the Doug Fir. It never ends well for me.

As if it needs to be said: The band is on non-literal FI-YAH.
Rocked the bells on Saturday.
Ted recognised me and came up and gave me a hug and I felt like King of the Underworld.
You guys have a lot to look forward to.

I saw them on Saturday in Boston. From beginning (with the Screaming Females and The Obits) to end (Rx covering "Since U Been Gone" with Marisa from Screaming Females on vocals) it was a top notch show.

I don't meant to resurrect an old thread but:
Anybody know what "The Truth is in the Garden" image means? It's on the lyrics sheet of my vinyl copy of the album and after having listened to the whole thing through while reading the lyrics, I'm sure it's not a lyric. Any ideas?
Also, awesome album.

NJ is the Garden State...? On the Tyranny of Distance lyric sheet there's a photo of two folks looking like they are clearing an area for a garden. So, to answer your question, I don't know.
I'm assuming that the red and black is anarchy flag...?

Ted Leo And The Pharmacists cover Tears For Fears
The morning after the Chicago stop of their U.S tour in support of the excellent new The Brutalist Bricks, Ted Leo And The Pharmacists stopped by The A.V. Club to grace us with a cover of Tears For Fears' 1985 smash hit, "Everybody Wants To Rule The World." The bees in the background made their stage debut at the band's album-release show, and one of them was adopted by The A.V. Club.
Wasn't sure where to put this...!!!!

I'm glad my friend got to hear this before he passed. Tears For Fears and Ted Leo were two of the many things we bonded over. I have a fond memory of me making him help me lug some of The Pharmacists' gear when they played Connecticut College a couple of years ago.
-
Hearts of Steele, are you from the Waterford/New London area? I do some playwriting and teaching at the O'Neill, which is affiliated with Conn. College. Beautiful and sketchy at the same time in that uniquely New England way, but I love it there.
I love TL/Rx lyrics, in part because they obviously mean something, and they have this great poetic cadence, but they can mean whatever you want them to. For a little while I liked to pretend that "C.I.A." was being sung to Tom, like Tom did something that Ted can't forgive, but they're still friends.

I'm from RI, right outside of Providence, but New London is not very far, a little less than an hour away. I saw a Slim Cessna's Auto Club show at that place near the train station (The Backstage Pass?) and have used an expired college ID to get a 1/2 off entree at Margaritas. My friend was a Conn. College '05 alum. He told me to come down for Floralia '08 because Ted was playing. Having gone to a school with a dry campus, I had never seen so many drunk kids in my life. It was a little overwhelming, and no one would smoke me up. And it was a little cold that day, too. I almost got into fight with some meathead (probably a lacrosse player) during Ted's set, due to his and his "bros" pushing and shoving. These two poor girls who were standing next to me were getting crushed against the metal barrier. I got the elbows going, and he started to give me some S Hit, about "throwin' 'bows at his bros." I told him, "I'm giving you 3 seconds to get the eff out of my face before I smash you." He totally backed down (which was surprising as he was a head taller than me), and we kinda made peace (ie he didn't push, and I didn't elbow). Worst crowd I've ever endured, drunk kids jumping the barrier, the student promoters doing nothing and actually encouraging their friends to jump over, things being thrown at/on stage. I saw a pork-pie hat whiz by Big Steve's head. He didn't flinch. Me and my friend helped The Pharmacists lug their gear back to their van as an apology for the shitty crowd. And that's what memories are made of.

Great story. This might come as a big surprise to you, but the theater kids are a little different from that.

Did not see in another recent thread but Ted Leo is at this year's Siren festival along with Screaming Females. Not sure what time anyone is playing.

^I'm taking my crazy 5 year old niece to that show tomorrow. Hopefully that's a good decision.

How did that go over? I went and it was pretty packed.

Siren was a blast. You might have seen me if you stopped by the screaming females & ted leo merch table. Their sets were great, especially loved when Marissa sang "Woke Up Near Chelsea" with Ted.

We had a blast. We even rode the Surf's Up while Night Marchers played right behind us -

She was a little wary about the loud music at first but we were both happy she got to see her first rock show (and first Ted Leo show).
