Someone called the show about this atrocious food item while it was still in "test marketing" phase:
http://open.salon.com//blog/sheldon_the_wonderhorse/2010/04/07/kfc_hates_you_and_everything_you_love
... and now it's getting more of a nationwide rollout. I think? Actually, I'm not sure how widespread the Double Down is at this point. Any sightings?
Patton O identified KFC as the supreme kings of Abject Loser Food ... and rather than running away from what Patton said, they seem to be embracing it.

Where's Ben Kharock when you need him?

Mmmm ... that sure is tempting.
Wait, what does "tempting" mean, again?

What do people have against bread?
-
That picture gave me heartburn. Not figuratively, either.
-
It just made me not want to eat anything at all. So maybe it's one of those reverse-mind effect things?

I'm reminded of this 30 Rock episode.
-

Yeah. I don't mean to be all dainty and all, but that is really gross looking. And that's only the gussied up food-porn photo version. I'm sure the sad-sack reality version is gross and depressing.
-
The thing is, if it were homemade, with decent ingredients, it would probably taste delicious. But it would still give me heartburn.
-
Well, it doesn't look like a cat's ass, it's definitely something like the advertisting pic, but it's still disgusting:

-
What, exactly, are you doubling down on?
-
That picture gave me heartburn. Not figuratively, either.
yup.
-
I don't think it's physically possible for me to eat that as a sandwich.
-
I will gladly try that "sandwich" (I guess it's a sandwich; does a sandwich have to have bread?) and report back. By all admissions, I have a weakness for fast food "novelty" foods. There's no way in hell I'm touching that shrimp taco thing though.
-

Colorectal cancer?

The shrimp taco is just a mediocre shrimp taco. I've had it at two Taco Bells in NC (Durham and Greensboro, if you're playing the buffcoat Home Game).
It's nothing to be frightened of. That shrimp is overcooked enough that it only barely has seafood-qualities left to it.
-
Durham and Greensboro, if you're playing the buffcoat Home Game
I call the little dog piece. I'm not getting stuck with that stupid top hat again.
-
Whatever, I'm hungover and the double-down looks like it will solve all the problems in the world for me right now.
Signed,
Shameless Susie
-
I too will eat that.
-
To everyone pledging to consume this thing: I challenge you to eat it as though it were an actual sandwich.
From the picture, I'm guessing that KFC is encouraging you to use the paper wrap as a protective gripping layer, kinda like the tinfoil on a burrito. But that seems like a cheat to me.
We're dusting these fried chicken patties for fingerprints, people.
-
The double down has landed. At least here in KY. I don't know if we get it 13 hours earlier than everyone else because it's home turf but, needless to say, I did not try it.
-
I could go for some double down action right about now.
So it's not available everywhere yet?
-
I'll be purchasing one tomorrow.
-

I went to the KFC website yesterday and there was a clock countdown at around 13 hours when I saw it but I went to KFC after that visit and it was already being sold so, I think it was available as of yesterday or so.
-
I am eating one tomorrow. Without the wrapper.
-
hey guys, what's the colonel sauce?

Don't ask

hey guys, what's the colonel sauce?
Is it made from actual colonels?
-
I just need to know if it's mayo or mustard based. ty

Hey, did you know you don't have to stick with fried chicken? You can get a grilled chicken double down!
It's 80 calories less than the original: Original: 540 cals 32g fat; Grilled: 460 cals 23 g fat. Interestingly enough, however, there is more sodium in the grilled double down (fried: 1380, grilled: 1430).
-
I don't think I've ever had KFC before, but this thread has made me go for it.
If I see any PETA guys, I'm going to run them over.
-
I refer y'all to the thread from last year where I posted the video of my friend attempting to eat one:

Are you SURE you wanna eat it still?
I'm sick just thinking about it ...
-
I would love to see the guy on "Man Versus Food" force fed these, kind of like the first victim in "Seven."
-
I chickened out.
I was invited to go to a Thai place for lunch today instead.
-

Or the exploding guy in "The Meaning of Life."
-
Everyone at my work ate one this past Sunday as a morale booster. I think one guy burned his lip trying to eat one. Luckily I don't work Sunday.

that may have been the most boring video I've ever seen. not funny. not clever. not particularly insightful. I'm dumber for having watched it.

A) he has a camera mounted on his head.
B) he took video of himself taking pictures of the sandwich.
-
I may have been a little harsh.
-
Yes, I'm sure you've seen worse.
-
Ha ha - yeah I think he got the whole "Maybe you really shouldn't eat this shit" point across.
If you were dumber for having seen it you'd, you know, go out & eat one immediately.
(and this guy eats bacon like ain't noone's business)

I may have been a little harsh.
They make em angry in Oklahoma.

I tackled the Double Down yesterday. And it was pretty damn good.
First off, I hadn't been to a KFC for years. The Double Down reminded me that, in the scheme of fast food and chicken, KFC ain't bad. In fact, I would say it's one of the better pieces of fried chicken you can get within 2 minutes of placing your order. Anyway, the quality was a nice surprise, but I'm getting ahead of myself.
You can get the Double Down on it's own or with a side and sodie for a total, in downtown Chicago, of $7.78. Both my dining companion and I opted for the Mac & Cheese which, besides the overly-orange color, was pretty appetizing. While the idea of another source of cholesterol and sodium may sound disgusting, it's actually a good idea to order a side, as the Double Down comes out HOT! After sampling the opener for a minute or two, we headed over to see the headliner.
Both pieces of chicken breasts were larger than I would have thought, but were as greasy as expected. Your lips have that post-meal grease on them afterwards. I'm not a huge bacon fan, but the two strips melted into the cheese were placed perfectly - not one- or lop-sided. The cheese itself was also pretty good; I bet the KFC focus groups probably got to sample a few different cheese combinations, but whoever suggested a blend of Monterey Jack and pepper jack was spot on. My dining companion, although more excited about the Double Down than I was, didn't finish his. I ate nearly every bite, save for a piece of fried chicken fat at the end of the top bun-breast.
I would HIGHLY recommend this food if you are under the influence of alcohol. If you're hungover, I think the amount of grease would make your life liveable again.
But do it NOW: Limited Time Only, people!
Bernard's Review: 3.5 stars (out of 4)
@daveB from Oakland: Even after eating it for 5-10 minutes, it is still very hard to hold without the wax paper, due to it's temp. I guess the alternative is using a knife and fork (does KFC even have those? We both got sporks with the mac), but that, too, seems like an out. I think the only way is to dive in with wax paper in hand, or wait for it to cool. But who wants to wait for it to cool? FAST food is all about the instant gratification.

I just picked one up. I'll let you know the real deal.

Thank ye. Didn't even notice!

Barfaroni.
Just wanted to say that. Thought this thread would be appropriate.

Someone at work offered me $20 to eat one tomorrow. I gladly accepted, even though I'll hate myself a little bit.
-
Hard to believe that there are worse fast food products out there and a salad at that.
-
Mike Show super-caller XMASTIME has pointed out that the Double Down is just Chicken Cordon Bleu that's been dumbed down for the 'That sounds French. Burn it!' crowd...

Haha that's awesome. You know you've got a winner of a food item when there's a dare involved and the person getting money for eating the food item hates himself.
I'm wondering how long it's gonna be before I buckle and end up eating one. It's bound to happen sooner or later.
-
why is everyone making such a big deal about this? If it had a bun nobody would give a shit.
-
If it had a bun, you'd have to be able to dislocate your jaw like a snake to eat the thing.
-
I think it's the sheer absurdity of the item. A sandwich with no bun? Bacon and cheese between two fried chicken breasts? It's insanity!
-
I'm just kind of scared of the sauce. What is that sauce, Andy?
-
They should make the counter at KFC look like a blackjack table.
-
The sauce is just a kind of dijonaisse.
There are tons of sandwiches without buns: they're those stupid atkins sandwiches.
-
why is everyone making such a big deal about this? If it had a bun nobody would give a shit.
Plus there's like 15 other fast foods that are worse and you wouldn't even know it. I would never in a million years think a salad could be worse than that.
-

But how many sandwiches have replaced the bread with TWO BREADED AND FRIED CHICKEN BREASTS?
It would be more impressive and hilarious if the chicken was not boneless.
-
Anybody seen the UCB episode where they had the Santeria booth at a religious convention that was selling cupcakes with chicken heads on them?
That was easily the funniest 2 seconds of television ever.
-

I think a bun would cut down on how greasy it looks. That's mostly what makes it look so gross in the close-ups.
-
For me, it's knowing it's KFC, an establishment whose food always tries my digestion. In addition, two hunks of deep-fried breaded (or even grilled) chicken, aside from being unpleasant to handle with one's bare hands, not only seem like overkill but also throw off the chicken-bacon/cheese proportion.
A lovely homemade chicken cordon bleu,* on the other hand, is a thing of beauty.
*Or one prepared in a decent restaurant.
-
aside from being unpleasant to handle with one's bare hands
That's what the wrapper is for! You can handle greasy paper instead of greasy chicken.
-
That makes all the difference!
-
Declaration: you would all love it.
Now the burden of proof is on you to prove me wrong, and I won't accept anything less than you trying it and not liking it as proof. No more trashing it without trying it. That's what I say.
-
I don't like mayo based sauces.
-
I wish it were Chik-Fil-A instead. I kind of wish everything were Chik-Fil-A.
-
Tried it tonight. Gotta confess, it's not quite the horror show that I expected. Pretty tasty, in fact. I give it an easy F+.
-
A double down made of Hákarl and some of that extreme maggoty cheese, that'd be something to be outraged about.
-
I don't like mayo based sauces.
You and me both, my friend. If it wasn't for that sketchy lube I would have tried one by now.
-

Yeah at least the chicken portion would taste good.

I feel like, even though they do work at KFC, if you asked them to hold the sauce, they could manage to accomplish that. Did none of you ever work a fast food job? Or if you did, was it at "You'll Damn Well Have It Our Way Express"?

They could accomplish it but, boy, they would make you pay for disturbing the routine. My sister does not eat ketchup. We always had to wait an extra 10 minutes at Mickey D's for them to make one like that. A great mystery of my childhood.

As a mayo hater, I can vouch for this treatment. Then you spend a few minutes watching the next few people order, which gives the self-doubt and self-loathing of eating fast food time to creep in. The whole experience is compromised.
I do have to say, the move toward making fast food "fresh to order" has tempered this problem a bit.
-
I used to be alright with mayonnaise, but I haven't eaten it since I saw some video of a morbidly obese guy eating it by the spoonful.
-
I am going to wash it down with some Mick Cafe.

Fear not, neighbours to the North. The Ontario government has backtracked on comments it may investigate the Double Down sandwich.
