I like to imagine that they're fans of each other. I can totally picture Chris Elliott dancing to Tandem Jump. What's wrong with me?

I see no reason at all to believe you're wrong about that.  You've pieced it together that they share a movie credit, right?

Hmmmm... I kinda see it...
At The Met they have murals of rock stars who have passed. The one of Buddy Holly looks just like Jonathan Richman.

also, I think Jonathan Richman resembles Ira from Yo La Tengo a bit, but maybe its just the shirt & splendid singing voice & guitar playing.
