Does Netflix replace DVD's with the Criterion release usually? I want to see Thief of Bagdad when it comes out but it looks like they already have a copy to rent...

Sometimes yes, sometimes no.  I wouldn't count on it.

I've never seen the film, but this cover is awesome:

Wow, that's surprising, but very cool - first Maddin for Criterion. Brand Upon the Brain! is great. Big fan over here.

(Braggin': just corresponded with Maddin about what images to include in an interview with his frequent collaborator George Toles, to be published in the film journal I'm an editor of.)

I like that one almost as much as the new High and Low cover:

I haven't seen the film either, but I think I remember hearing that it wasn't going to be released on DVD. Another point for Criterion, I guess.

Re-released this August.  So, uh... is it actually any good?

Sure! If you like watching people eat poop for 3 hours.

Oh, 3 hours? That's a bit much.

Well, it's not actually 3 hours long...I was exaggerating. It's probably 2. But with all those wonderful Criterion extras, heck, you could get 6 hours of mindless torture.

I thought it looked good (as far as the way it was shot) and it had an interesting angle, but all the same, it's pretty brutal. Don't get me wrong, I've enjoyed films that have disturbed me before-- because they seem to have some bigger purpose, but Salo was not one of them.

I put Salo in the same category as Bum Fights. Totally worthless. I'd rather watch Cannibal Holocaust or something before I'd watch Salo again.

Mod, please replace all reference to SALO: 120 DAYS OF SODOM with AIR BUD. Thanks.
I'm warning you with peace and love.

I haven't seen Salo since I was a kid, so I wouldn't know. I'll probably check it out when it's out on DVD again.

Haha, yeah I realize that sounds terrible. I guess I was 13-14? Too young, anyway.

Salo its the high art version of a scat film with added elements of brutal torture.
