Yeah, that article TL posted was pretty gross. I wonder if that applies to stuff like Science Diet or the food we buy from our vet's office. It's still commercially produced food, but I don't know if there's any difference between that and the Purina etc. stuff. I'm definitely going to do some further checking.
I'll probably go into the wee hours.

Moving on from pet food for a minute, anyone read Michael Pollan's, "The Omnivore's Dilemma" (http://www.amazon.com/gp/reader/0143038583/ref=sib_dp_pt/103-8052027-4002215#reader-link)?  I'm truly "lost in the supermarket" these days...
Now write me a receipt so I can tip on outta here...

I have not yet, but my mother read this and then promptly called me to apologize for the "diet she raised us on". I am curious.

The vegan pet portion of this loose thread got me thinking about the theory of blood types having to do with which humans are "natural carnivores" and which are descended from less blood thirsty protein seekers.
I'd be curious to hear what TL (or any other vegetarians/vegans) has heard or read on this subject.

Take me to school.

Dang - your mom shouldn't blame herself - we've all been sold a crock of high-fructose corn syrup on this one.  Who knew?  But without getting too into it, this is what I was hinting at with the "industrial food" comment in re pet food.  The horroRs (-ed) of slaughter houses are not new to most people, but the horrors of industrial farmed corn?  Ew buoy...
As far as that blood type diet goes, honestly, when you mentioned it I remembered hearing about it at some point, but I know nothing about it.  On that subject, my school ain't worth the tuition, but I'll definitely look into it!

In any case, my comment had more to do with the fact that JJ's girlfriend equated emotionality and emotional openness with stupidity.

I just read the article TL linked to about what's in commercial animal food (my favorite ingredient?  "dehydrated paunch products").  It sure made me feel a lot less guilty about feeding my cats supermarket chicken sometimes (.79/pound as opposed to $3/pound for organic).  And I think an animal on a homemade vegan diet might be better off than one eating the poison we can buy for them in the grocery store.

Allow me to explain.  My gf was and I were both making a case for emotional openness being a trait (symbolic and actual) of dogs and dogness.  A friend of ours then equated that with stupidity, and thus a really contentious argument began (because we think emotionality can be a good and NOT stupid thing).

As for calling dogs retards, would you be so quick to condemn the FOT Mascot Dogmo!?

In all total honesty, though, I'm getting pretty fried on all the cat-loving going on on this board as of late.  Cat talk and cat pictures ---take it down a notch.

My mom is currently reading that. I called her one day, and she said, "Hi, Laurie, I'm reading about corn sex."

Indeed it is - in all its hybridized, eunuched, sliks-at-the-tip-of-the-ear-for-nothing-any-longer, glory!
I was just kiddin', Laurie.
