interesting. I've always agreed pretty much with everything Maher says and stands for (we differ a bit on Israel though) and think he's been rather funny and sharp on his tv shows.

If I'm recalling that Mellencamp episode (I'm gonna have to revisit it on youtube), wasn't the crux of the argument that the Red Staters were just "simple" folk, which JM was seeing as an honorable salt-of-the-earth type thing, whereas Maher thought that this ignorance was something that helped to cause GWB to be elected/re-elected, and shouldn't necessarily be celebrated?

ok, maybe I better watch that ep. again.

edit: found that clip.

Ouch. Of course, I'm the wrong person to ask about this since the whole "Midwesterners = backwards nimrods" assumption gets me, as a Midwesterner, kinda riled up.
I'll probably go into the wee hours.

Not to mention The Cramps, Dead Boys, Pagans, Stooges, MC5, Pere Ubu, New Bomb Turks, King Records, Guided by Voices, The Gories, The Dirtbombs...just to name a few right off the top of my head. With time, I could come up with an unwieldy list that nobody would complete.

Throw in the Litter, Husker Du, Suicide Commandos, Prince, the Coen Brothers, Terry Gilliam, Mitch Hedberg and Joel Hodgson. And Dave Winfield, who isn't an artistic visionary but did manage to piss off George Steinbrenner.

I thought about mentioning them but there's been so much "yay Mats" stuff around town (thanks to this moon-eyed kiss-ass biography that came out recently) that I've got Replacements fatigue. I wonder if people are going to be such big dorks about Dillinger Four 15 years from now. (NOTE: they should.)

In a just world, D4 would already be huge.  Does Patty still get naked on stage?

My issue with Maher and Mellencamp is that Maher reduces the entire reason that the people in the Midwest voted for Bush down to them being naive imbeciles who can't see they're being swindled, like everyone is supposed to be just like him: some smug, street-smart d-level comic with a Lou Reed-syndrome and a filthy mouth.

David Foster Wallace is also from the midwest...the list is too long. Minnesota alone is responsible for a huge number of awesome underground bands...

Also, if it weren't for the midwest the cowboy shirt and trucker hat craze of the early 00s would have never seized Brooklyn...wait, that's a bad thing.

First entry in my hate pit, Jeanne Moos. I hate her fucking voice, the stupid puns and all the moronic non-stories she reports on.
