Would you buy an HDTV online?
« on: April 16, 2008, 09:44:17 PM »
My dad's looking to buy an HDTV and asked me if I'd buy one online. I've never bought anything that expensive online and usually I like to have a storefront to go to if I buy something that pricey if something goes wrong. What do you think?

You can't beat online prices. When I bought mine I read a load of reviews on amazon to see which ones people rated, then I went to the mall to check it out in person. Online was about 2 or 300 cheaper.

I think if you shop around and are willing to wait a little while you can find just as good a deal in store as online.  I am always leery of buying big items like that online because returning them is such a bitch if there is anything wrong.  Plus, I'll bet most of the big box stores will price match if you bring them a reputable online price (not a closeout/discontinued model/etc...)

So: if he's got to go get one now, buying online is the way to go.  if not, I would shop around a little and watch for deals.

We were able to get our 42" Sharp Aquos LCD for $799 at the VA Canteen (neither my wife nor I are in any way service connected) and because it was in the VA, we didn't have to pay tax on it.

What size is he looking for and what's his budget (obviously because of the nature of the initial post I assume he wants to spend as little as possible, but where what is his upper limit?)

yeah, I would look online, then.

I have a consumer reports online account if you want to check it out and then go look at froogle for the best prices.

I bought a 36" behemoth CRT online five years ago and the experience was great!

Then I bought a dishwasher online and the experience was horrible.

But I've had good and bad experiences with stores, too.  The important thing is to get a reliable appliance - you can research pretty well online.
I really don't appreciate your sarcastic, anti-comedy tone, Bro!

this is the route i take frequently.  if they dont bite, oh well...but usually they'll belly up to letting you pay the online price since they want to see you open their wallet and pay them- not some other clown.

good luck.

How about a refurbished? Is that a bad idea?

I usually like refurbished deals, but it depends on the warranty that they offer.
