good, i'm glad i'm not alone here. i was at the first show Dan ever played (the OCDJ benefit with People Like Us, Matmos and Jason Forrest), i talked to him at a WFMU record fair and he gave me his live cd (which is now impossible to find) cause i played his stuff on my radio show, i used to talk to him on aim all the time, and we talked about getting him a gig somewhere at Rutgers... that didn't really happen, but eventually he toured with OCDJ, and they played my friend Machine's basement. and i've seen dozens (hundreds?) of New Brunswick basement shows, and this was the only one i ever saw Tom show up to. i remember Dan was really super excited because Liam Lynch (of Sifl & Olly, my favorite tv show ever) was about to do a video for one of his tracks.
obviously since then, he got a best new music in pitchfork and so now his shows are super packed so it's not quite the same as the basement show days. but anyone who can fill up the Bowery Ballroom and divide the room up into sections and have a dance contest and have people run up and down the balcony, something positive and encouraging cause i don't really know how to finish this sentence.

how is it that his first show ever was with Matmos and OCDJ?  Don't most musicians start out kind of small?
Dan Deacon = obnoxious glitter-pop drug music.  I'm sure he's a nice guy, but wtf his music isn't THAT good.

i dunno, he told me that was his first show. i was kind of surprised when he told me that. he'd been on OCDJ's show before, and well, 3 of the people playing the show have/had shows on WFMU, so it's not that surprising.

Bjork showed up to this show to see Matmos, but i didn't know she was there until someone told me many months later.

he doesn't use a laptop tho, he uses all sorts of junky thriftstore electronics.

to each his own, but i've been to tons of shows that were just people headbanging with a laptop, and i usually have more fun at these types of shows than i do anywhere else.

Sounds like maybe I should've walked two blocks and gone to this show.  Sigh.

It seems to me that Dan Deacon has taken a page from Jason Forrest with his live style.  Balding overweight guy amped and having an awesome time to electronic music.  It's actually pretty infectious and fun.

I can't believe you didn't go see Tim and Eric.

As for Dan Deacon, I haven't been exposed to him much, but what I've seen struck me as odd and not in a funny way. Not saying he's not a nice guy. I feel like crap for agreeing to him being in the creepopedia.

This here... just not my thing, I guess.

I will, however, retract my statement that Rivers would lose the creep fight. After hearing all these nice things about Dan Deacon I can only imagine that Rivers is a bigger creep.

To reiterate what I said on Idolator: Weezer look like the sex offender version of the Hold Steady in that picture.

re: tim and eric

in my defense, I've never seen more than four minutes of anything they've done, and most of that I've found "odd and not in a funny way", to quote your earlier post about Dan Deacon.

re: Deacon video

I don't know, I actually get the appeal of that.

I will say he's pretty overrated in terms of music, but I think he's a pretty great live performer so I can't begrudge his success.

I think the creep factor arguably enters when the balding, overweight guy wants to take everybody back to the kind of thing they bounced around to when they were 5 years old.  Like the others have said, I'm sure he's a nice guy but it all seems like kind of a forced, pre-pubescent idea of "fun."
