Subs are generally the way to go, but in certain cases there are films where the "original language" is not so cut-and-dry one way or the other, e.g. many Italian genre films (Gialli, spaghetti westerns, etc) where English and Italian audio tracks were each recorded during post-production and attached to the prints for release in their respective countries.  This is also true for a few of Herzog's movies and I'm sure others as well.  In these cases, English dubs are acceptable if not downright preferable.
Don't worry, I'm not actually a fan of the film Se7en.  I just think that numerical spelling is hilarious.

As a slob that is trying to convince himself he's a snob, I have to say subtitles are essential almost always.

I'm still a slob as I have shied away from the early silent Criterion stuff. Someday I'll get to them, but as for now there's too many of these crazy "talkies" I still need to see.

Dubs are appropriate for spaghetti westerns.

Subs are for arugula-eating, latte-drinking Volvo drivers who won't watch Fox News Channel.  So they're great for me and my family!
