I've been going back to Cornelius recently. Didn't really listen to much of his stuff after 'Point', but now's the time to fix that. Also: Prefab Sprout's 'Swoon'.

Thee Oh Sees/Drop.  Apropos of nothing, anyone know how Tom views Nick Cave?  I assume he's not a fan.  Although Cave has a sense of humor, he's kind of hard to take because he's so damn earnest.  I don't think he's the same type of faker as Waits, but a variation of the theme somehow.  I did catch one mention combing through the archives when Wurster mentioned a super group called "Mick Nick Mick Pick Nick" or some variation of that mix, and one of the Nicks was Nick Cave. Perfect Scharpling/Wuster humor too, the more I thought about it, the funnier it became.

I am on a jazz recommendation of the day kick, and today it's Stan Kenton's Artistry in Music. Really wrapped up in the 50's and 60's so far, but it will process into the present eventually. So far I have recommended these;

1952   Milt Jackson   Wizard of the Vibes   31-Aug
1953   Duke Ellington and His Orchestra   Ellington Uptown   1-Sep
1954   Clifford Brown and Max Roach   Clifford Brown and Max Roach   2-Sep
1951   Duke Ellington and His Orchestra   Masterpieces by Ellington   3-Sep
1956   Ella Fitzgerald   Ella Fitzgerald Sings the Cole Porter Song Book   4-Sep
1949   Duke Ellington   Liberian Suite   5-Sep
1957   Sonny Rollins   Saxophone Colossus   6-Sep
1947   Duke Ellington   Duke Ellington at Carnegie Hall   7-Sep
1946   Stan Kenton   Artistry in Rhythm   8-Sep

I heard about him in that Sheryl Crow song.
I really don't appreciate your sarcastic, anti-comedy tone, Bro!

Music lovers take note:

For a mere $150, you can see JD and the Straight Shot open for the Eagles tonight at Madison Square Garden.

Recently saw the movie August: Osage County, which was completely insufferable, but I should've been warned from the movie's opening to run from the theater.  Within the first five minutes, both Eric Clapton and JD and the Straight Shot were given prominent airplay (with JD and the Straight Shot even being called out by name).

Ty Segall's Manipulator is pretty awesome. Probably my favorite album of the year so far.

The J.Period stuff is kinda underwhelming. Although The Nate Dog greatest hits is a fun listen and I haven't even thought about all that west coast rap in about ten years so maybe it's just me being nostalgic. The Messengers mixtape is cool for people who have never heard of Fela Kuti, Bob Marley (I envy you), or Bob Dylan before.

Has anyone else listened to the Acid Rap Mixtape by Chance the Rapper? I can't endorse every song off it, but the songs that I like are so mind-blowingly awesome that I probably have listened to at least part of it every day for the last year and a half.

Benjamin Booker's recent full-length on the way home from work. I was initially disappointed in it when I first got it a little while back, but it's really grown on me since.

Plus there is a new Screaming Females song on the internets that is pretty sweet. Not really like all the other stuff that I've heard from them but still really good. On a side note, That little mutant Marissa Paternoster big-timed me at the Ottobar once, but then 15 minutes later proceeded to melt my face off, so all was forgiven.

He got his start in Tampa, FLA.

I'll probably be deaf by the end of the year from listening to this new King Tuff album. I know I'm damaging parts of my inner ear, but I still want it LOUDER!
