I missed out on a lot of metal when I was growing up.  Recently started getting into weird mid/late period Sabbath like

 

So now I'm trying a lot of metal that probably most people would think "I can't believe you've never heard that before".  Some faves are

I would investigate Celtic Frost and Voivod. Also, each year for the past several years Decibel magazine has done a special Top 100 issue focusing on a specific flavour of metal (black, death, thrash, "old-school", etc.). Highly recommended.

Thanks for the recs! With those Decibel lists and Youtube, it's crazy how much of a genre you can tour through within a couple of hours. 

Also started a little into Voivod- wild, truly unclassifiable stuff.  Sounds like Albini took a bit of their glass shard guitar sound for Shellac.
