Two weeks in a row some weirdo calls up and tries to talk to Tom about football, a sport he has never exhibited any interest in on the show as far as I can remember.  What the hell.

Did this guy not sound like Odenkirk?

I mentioned that on the chat. He sounded like a younger version of Odenkirk.

Glad I'm not the only one who noticed that.

Did anyone else think Tom bombed with Bob Odenkirk?

No. Tom would not have unleashed Gary on an unsuspecting Odenkirk. Whether Bob O. listens to the show himself or was filled in ahead of time by Tom or Andy Kindler, he was prepped. He played it strictly deadpan, which may have given you that impression.

You can tell with Tom breaking slightly that Odenkirk was in on it.

It reminded me of the old Matt Walsh appearances, where Matt played it totally straight as Tom, Jon Benjamin and Jon Glaser were screwing with him.

The giveaway that Bob was in on it, if there really was any doubt, was when he asked Gary if he was a real squirrel or a puppet.

Well, also, not to get all analytical an' shit, but it's just not how Tom works. Remember how upset he got at the idea that Chris Elliott would be subjected to a Wally Wackiman call? When Tom gets a guest or a call-in whose time is clearly valuable, he doesn't want them thinking they've dialed into some dumb prank show.

My personal pick is
May 21, 2002: Daily Show Correspondent Matt Walsh Calls In To Promote His Television Special But Is Interrupted By A Pair Of Fans And Is Chastised By SNL's Horatio Sanz

which contains one of my all-time favorite lines from the show...
MW: Can I say one thing in my defense? He's completely lying.

Those calls are amazing. Matt Walsh's sense of being railroaded is magnificent. Horatio Sanz' and Jon Benjamin's refusal to play along is perfect.

Matt Walsh returns the favor on the banned David Ogden Stiers Clayton Thomas calls. Good times.

no, but I did wish it was Tom talking to Bob, in the usual style of a Best Show guest interview, rather than Gary. Not least because people on the phone can never keep up with what Gary was saying but also because the interview was limited by it being Gary and "Breaking Nuts" in a way it wouldn't have been if it was Tom.

And this might only be me, cus I start listening to the podcast on a Friday morning around 7am, but opening the show with 30 minutes of Gary screaming was hard going. I much prefer the gentle tones of Tom.

Not to be a negatives-only poster: Paul Stanley/laser talk was great, as are these brief tough guy calls from JW the past few weeks. Nice to have a brief call even when he's on tour!
