Tom: "Save that for the fish and chips place."

Listening to week before last's show.  I wish Ben from Brooklyn had had a better phone so I could hear more about Ocean Grove.  My father for a time used to go to a Methodist community called Ocean Park in southern Maine in order to take advantage of the nice tennis courts.  I have fond memories of sitting with my mother in a cool clubhouse drinking Fresca with a scoop of lime sherbet in it, waiting for my father's game to be over.

Another Maine/New Jersey crossover:  At another point in my youth, I worked for a few weeks at a horrible souvenir joint in Old Orchard Beach, which is a honky-tonk of a tourist town. Twelve hours a days, six days a week.  An hour off for lunch, and an hour for supper.  I made $70 a week.  It was an awful job.  I was fourteen.

Anyway, it says a great deal about the kind of town Old Orchard was (still is) that fairly often the store--Molko's Department Store, I'll have you know--would receive T-shirts emblazoned with "Wildwood, N.J." and some enthusiastic slogan, instead of the T-shirts printed with the same slogan and "Old Orchard Beach, Maine."

God, that job was awful.  My only foray into retail.

P.S.  This is the kind of exciting stuff you all would be hearing if I called more often.  Aren't you lucky I don't?

And, yes, Tom Sawyer is dopey.  It's weird that Huckleberry Finn is the sequel.

I forget who it was but some comedian (I think) was talking about how he was reading Huckleberry Finn to his children after reading Tom Sawyer. He was talking about how Tom Sawyer is such a little shit and he was relieved when he was reading Huck Finn. And then near the end, here comes Tom Sawyer!

Obviously whoever was saying that was much more eloquent and funnier than I.

That was Louis CK from a recent episode of "Louie", talking about how he wanted to avoid Huck Finn because Huck had a tendency to let fly with the racial slurs.

That was it, thanks! Louie is pretty fantastic.

The great thing about Tom's appearance in Huckleberry Finn is that he's portrayed as an immature, privileged idiot whom Huck thinks is kind of a jerk.

It made me laugh even though I had no idea that fish & chips places were known for being sleazy joints.

Re: Kids being shoved in lockers- allegedly during seventh grade gym class a kid got shoved into a locker. I was absent that week (happily because were I there I would have been a likely candidate for shoving) but for the rest of the year "Help me! I can't  breathe!" became a catchphrase amongst the bully set. The lockers were full sized and seventh graders can be pretty small so it's more plausible than shoving a high school junior in a locker.

I wonder if Tom will be playing her music tonight, in honor of her birthday.

Now Spike's mad about Madonna? Was being mad about Jennifer Lopez and P. Diddy a little too au courant?

Spike, I can't wait for you to take down the Andrews Sisters!

This reminds me: Spike, I think it was very mean-spirited of you to rejoice in the collapse of Jennifer Lopez's marriage.
